David Silverman is a prominent American atheist advocate and author, best known for his "firebrand" style of activism promoting atheism and religious equality. Before his activism career, Silverman was a Professional Inventor at Bell Labs, where he earned scores of patents and met Arno Penzias, co-discoverer of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. He served as President of American Atheists from 2010 to 2018, leading America's oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to atheists (founded by Madalyn Murray O'Hair). During his tenure, he organized the historic 2012 Reason Rally, the largest gathering of atheists in history. He later served as Executive Director of Atheist Alliance International and currently is Chair of the Advisory Board for Atheists For Liberty. Silverman has appeared on numerous TV shows, including The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity, and a CNN Special on Atheism, where he passionately debated for separation of Church and State. His activism focused on advancing equality for atheists, emphasizing that direct, honest discussions about faith can foster greater understanding and freedom for all. Silverman's debut book, Fighting God: An Atheist Manifesto for a Religious World (St. Martin's Press, 2015), argues that openly challenging religious beliefs is not only effective but an act of kindness toward society. His latest work, Darkshiner (Godless Universe Press, 2025), is a speculative sci-fi novella exploring the clash between science and dogma, and Truth vs Good, drawing from his real-world experiences, including inspirations from both atheist activism and Bell Labs.
