About this listen

You can’t hide the cracks under the spotlight.

Dusk. Leader of The Underdogs. Destined for greatness. Lives in the now.
Abe. AKA Lolly. Iridescent. Unicorn.

All Dusk wants out of life is for his band to become world famous. He also wants to have a lot of fun along the way. And to get his rocks off. When he wants something, he goes for it, consequences be damned.

So when he sees a gorgeous pink-haired guy who is the human equivalent of tattooed cotton candy, he can’t help but have a taste. But it’s when Lolly ends up on their tour bus that Dusk knows their meeting was destiny.

Abe is the kind of guy who goes with the flow. He was hitchhiking anyway, so why not spend the week with a hot piece of rocker beefcake, getting smothered by his sexy long hair? And why not play the part of the supportive cutie while he’s at it? It’s not like he’d be sticking around for long anyway.

All plans hit a wall when photos of Abe and Dusk emerge online, suddenly pushing the band into the spotlight. To take advantage of the sudden popularity, the band offers Abe money for staying.

Which means money for being in a fake relationship with Dusk.

Which isn’t even fake.

Or is it?

Sweet & Hot, Nicely Performed by Tyler Kent

As much as I love the darker side of the Merikans, it's awful nice when they're sweet.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy is a traditional boy meets boy, with some quintessential Merikan twists. I adore Lolly, who's spunky and punky and 100% his own person, and Dusk who's a bit of a horn dog. These two work their way through their first love affair, navigating the bumps along the way.

I read this one a few years ago, but I really enjoyed Tyler Kent's performance in Not Like Other Boys, so I couldn't resist the re-do in audio. This is a story which leaves a smile on your face, and Tyler Kent's performance just enhances it all.

Rock and Roll charisma

I loved Dusk and Abe/Lolly. Lust at first sight to love and longing. These two are made for each other! There's a fair bit of miscommunication (or no communication) and growing up as The Underdogs strive for fame and recognition. I really like all the characters and loved the hints and lives of the other band mates and their eventual stories. A very charismatic and chemistry filled story. a great read

Manic Pixie Dream

It took me a minute to get into the listen, but I did, and it ended up being a good listen - super sweet and low angst. Overall, the story and narration were well done.

A Rockstar and his unicorn

This was a sweet Rockstar book, I have to say, though, about halfway through the book, I lost interest, and my mind wandered for a while, but the ending brought me back.

Saying that, I adored the characters, especially Lolly (Abe), well defined and could picture him perfectly, great personality and descriptions. Dusk and the rest of the Underdogs were a little more normal.

I lost interest for a while after the hot-tub incident, and it took time for me to get back into them, which is a pity.

Narration from Wyatt baker was smooth and easy to listen to, although like usual, I did speed it up slightly to 1.25.

Great new series

I really enjoyed this take on the fake boyfriend trope. What hooked me was that unlike many stories of this kind where one of the characters is serious and the other is out for a good time, here both Dusk and Abe go into the fake relationship just looking to have a good time for a bit. and act on their instant attraction. Watching that change and deepen for both of them made for a great story. Bring on the stories for the rest of the band and let Tyler Kent work his performing magic on them. He captured the change from happy go lucky to serious for these guys perfectly.

Great Story & Narration🎧 Sweet & Spicy🔥Hot!

I am a huge fan of rockstar romance novels and K.A. Merikan does not disappoint with this unique and original story. The story is well written with interesting storylines that grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it for the entire book. The characters are likable and full of personality, they are easy to relate to and connect with too. The Underdogs are an up and coming rock band, they have been touring and playing at different venues trying to expand their audience. Dusk Hill is the lead singer of the band, his fellow bandmates are his brother Dawn, his best friends Mage and Sid, they are traveling from venue to venue in an old bus. Needing food they make a pitstop and that is where Dusk sees him, the one who took his breath away, a dreamy, pink haired, lollipop licking, beauty and he had to have him. The two hit it off right away, you could even say they fell for each other, they soon realized they needed to get out of there and rushed out and away from the place. Dusk names his new friend Lolly and welcomes him to stay on the bus until he gets to his next destination. I loved those two together, the chemistry between them is smoking hot. These are two strong characters, Lolly has a colorful personality, there was a little bit of a mystery about him and it was great to learn more about him. Dusk is focused on maintaining an image and hoping that the band makes it big, the band is trying to maintain an image but when Dusk and Lolly are caught in a compromising position and a photo is leaked it changes everything. I loved how everything plays out in this book, there is never a dull moment in this exciting, fast paced and cleverly plotted story. There is plenty of drama, a touch of angst, heartfelt emotions and a smoking hot romance. K.A Merikan, thank you for another awesome story.

🎧📚🎧 And for the terrific narration, Tyler Kent is a talented narrator and voice artist. He did a great job bringing these characters to life, giving each character their own voice and personality, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. His portrayal of the characters was spot on, he took each role and made it his own and sounded believable in every role he played. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and projected them into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen.

Instalove

This story is sweeter than the authors’ dark romances, Dust and Lolly are adorables. I enjoyed a lot the first part of the book but the pool and video incidents and their consequences decreased my mood quite a bit. Fortunately, things are settled beautifully, very good end actually.

A sweeter side of this writing duo

Manic Pixie Dream Boy came as somewhat of a surprise to me as all of the other books I've read/listened to from K.A. Merikan has all had quite dark characters and twists to them. This story has a lighter, sweeter side that even made me awwww in a few places. While I was listening, I couldn't help but think of it being akin to a teen drama. Dusk seems a bit younger in how he deals with his "relationship" with Lolly and Lolly is looking to keep his independence having learnt to rely on only himself after the treatment he's received from family and foster carers.
The two men are hot together from their first meeting at a gas station and Lolly ends up travelling with the band when he and Dusk are caught on camera. It's thought that they make a cute couple which can be used as positive promotion. Dusk and the rest of the band are travelling from place to place playing only small time gigs but this new attention on him and Lolly brings them a new chance that has to be taken. What he didn't envisage is the attachment that forms for the hot, young guy. It's interesting listening to how he goes about trying to get the band out there but also wanting to make Lolly happy too, considering their relationship goes from 0-100 in a matter of days.
I enjoyed listening to all of the different characters and the relationships they have with each other. I'm especially looking forward to Dawn's story, Dusk's brother. There's a good plot here that develops nicely and is well paced throughout. Overall a good story from the authors, refreshingly different from some of their other work.
Tyler Kent provides good voices for the characters. Emotions, actions and interactions are conveyed well and drew me into the story from the start.

Pixie dream boy!

I enjoyed the book, even if it’s so different from the dark romances by the author. There’s a band, not well known but on their way there. Dusk, the lead singer, meets “Lolly” at a stop on the road. It’s insta love, and after a bathroom disaster they run away together and with the band. Abe is more than Dusk has seen. They keep it superficial until they realize there’s more. Then there is no stopping them. Awesome characters and a fun romance.

Good start to a contemporary series

I have either read or listened to several of K.A. Merikan's books. This is the second "contemporary" story. Although I personally enjoy their darker materials, this audiobook was a bit of fluffy fun to get through part of the work day.

Everything is not all rainbows, hearts, and roses, so there is some angst going on; especially when the press posts a picture of what was supposed to be a hitchhike with benefits. And, even though the sexy times were hot, real feelings start to develop. Add in the bargain struck, and what was once fun and flirty has become tiresome and questioning.

I love the rest of the band as well, so I am looking forward to seeing the next book released in audio. This is completely different from any of the MC books or any of the other darker books. As I said before, light and fluffy with a dash or two of angst. I was happy to see Dusk and Abe (Lolly) get their happily ever after.

I thought Tyler Kent did a great job with the narration. His inflections and pacing were very well done. For a new to me narrator, he did pretty well.
