Summary

Does a bear shift in the woods?

Well, partially. That was what got grizzly-shifter Ted Farnsworth into trouble. He wasn’t trying to break the Secrecy Pact. He just wants people to see the real him. So he signs up with the mate-matching service Supernatural Selection - which guarantees marriage to a perfect partner. Not only will Ted never be lonely again, but once his new beaver-shifter husband arrives, they’ll build Ted’s dream wilderness retreat together. Win-win.

Quentin Bertrand-Harrington, scion of an incubus dynasty, has abstained from sex since nearly killing his last lover. When his family declares it’s time for him to marry, Quentin decides the only way not to murder his partner is to pick someone who’s already dead. Supernatural Selection finds him the ideal vampire, and Quentin signs the marriage agreement sight unseen.

But a mix-up at Supernatural Selection contracts Quentin with Ted. What’s Ted supposed to do with an art historian who knows more about salad forks than screwdrivers? And how can Quentin resist Ted’s mouthwatering life force? Yet as they work together to untangle their inconvenient union, they begin to wonder if their unexpected match might be perfect after all.

Very welcome endeavour into something different

I looked for a change in listen and chose this on a whim... and really enjoyed it. All my comments are subjective other then that I listened to it in one day and will now be starting the second book.

A nice story, but not my favourite in this series.

This is the first in the Supernatural Selection series, but fourth in the overall Mythmatched universe. I will quickly list the reading order here as it is not obvious on Audible, Amazon or Goodreads that they are all related:

Fae Out of Water (Kendrick brothers)
1. Cutie and the Beast (also available on Audible)
2. The Druid Next Door (also available on Audible)
3. Bad Boy's Bard (also available on Audible)

Supernatural Selection
4. Single White Incubus (forms a duology with Vampire with Benefits)
5. Vampire with Benefits
6. Demon on the Low-Down

7. Howling on Hold (also available on Audible)
8. Possession in Session (a free ebook download from the author's website when you subscribe to the mailing list)
9. Witch Under Wraps (also available on Audible)

You could enjoy the Supernatural Selection series without having first read the Fae out of Water trilogy, but there is a lot of world-building that happens in those first three books, and all of the main characters are recurring through the rest of the books.

I first read the whole of Mythmatched just over a year ago, and I remember being delighted that the world had been continued beyond the Kendrick brothers' stories. I am similarly happy that these books are now being brought to audio.

This was my first MM paranormal/fantasy universe, and got me hooked on the genre, and MM in general. I have a fondness for the universe as a whole, but enjoy some of the books much more than others.

The premise of Single White Incubus is a fun one, and I love that it forms a duology with Vampire with Benefits, with the events in both books occurring concurrently. However, for a romance, I have to really love the main characters and the couple together for me to be truly ecstatic about the book, and that is not how I feel in this case.

I'm not a huge fan of Ted in this book - although I have to say that he redeemed himself considerably in my eyes in Howling on Hold. In this book he is really very childish, selfish, and - aside from what he can do for him physically - I can't feel that he's a very good partner for Quentin.

The things I really enjoyed in this book are how much Quentin loves Ted, and how fiercely protective he is of him. I was also really struck by both characters' use of the word "husband" as though it was a magic word, a dearest dream. It is such a treat to spend more time with the characters beloved from the Fae out of Water trilogy. I would certainly recommend this book if you enjoyed those three books, and also to set up the scenario for Vampire with Benefits. One of the MCs from that book - my dear, sweet Casimir - is one of my absolute favourite characters from the whole universe!

Greg Boudreaux's narration is, as ever, flawless. I am a big fan of his work, so I feel like my next words are a blasphemy.

Ideally I would have rather Joel Leslie narrate the whole of the Mythmatched universe.

It has been a while since I listened to the Fae out of Water series, and so gave this recording as fresh as ear as I am able. The truth is that had I not listened to the previous three books, I would be absolutely over the moon with this narration. However, I did listen to them, and Joel Leslie's work on those audiobooks are some of the best I have ever heard. Joel is particularly talented with the numerous nuanced British accents, and this was on full display in Fae out of Water, His accent work is exquisite in those books, and absolutely faithful to the text. Considering the number of recurring characters, I imagine it would be very jarring if I ever wanted to listen to Supernatural Selection straight after Fae out of Water.

Greg has done a brilliant job with this book, but it is difficult to have a change in narrator at any time, even when going from one exceptional narrator to another.

Really good

So glad I found this author. This is the first book I've listed to by them but will be getting the next in the series. It's got a good flow, comedic moments and is just a lovely easy to listen to story about an unexpected couple.

Greg is always a great narrator, and this is no exception. A narrator can absolutely make or break a book but he did a brilliant job so thank you to him!

However Imperfect You're Perfect For Someone.

MM, Paranormal, Shifter, Urban Fantasy Romance. I laughed so much listening to this story, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I was cheerleading from the start. I loved the narration from Greg Boudreaux, he really did justice to the characters. There are a few angsty moments but overall it's light and sweet. Guaranteed HEA.

Loved it!

4.5 Stars!

I absolutely loved this first book in the Supernatural Selection series! Funny story here, I read book 2 in the series a while ago, and have book 3 in my Kindle, but I hadn't read Single White Incubus yet. Bad Mari, I know, so many books and too little time. So, thankfully, when I saw the audiobook, I knew I had to listen to it.

Ted was the most adorable cinnamon roll of a bear shifter, a gentle giant, with more heart than brains (and I say this lovingly, because he was so sweet). It took me a while to warm up to Quentin, though, he was eh, not as charming as Ted, but once he started developing deeper feelings for Ted, he totally won me over. I just adored them together and I wish we'd have more page-time with them as a couple, but I was fairly happy with what we got.

I loved catching up with David and Alun, Mal, and Matt! And that scene with Quentin as Ted's advocate was all kinds of awesome!

Greg Boudreaux always does such a great job in his narrations, he has a huge range of voices and they're all amazing, which works especially well in ensemble-heavy books like this one.

Overall, Single White Incubus is a definite recommendation by me. It's a fun, engaging, steamy read, I was a bit annoyed at Quentin for a while, but I got over that and ended up rooting for him and Ted to find their HEA.

Brilliant narration on an entertaining romance

What an enjoyable story! I loved the characters, their connection and the story that they go through in this book. Shockingly this is my first read from E.J. Russell but I cannot wait for the next in this series and will be looking into her other work.
Ted is a lonely bear living in the woods. He's been causing a bit of trouble so in order to help settle his life and move forward he's signed up to Supernatural Selections to find him a husband. He's looking forward to their arrival but unexpectedly, Quentin, an incubus, turns up looking for his new husband, who is not Ted!
The two men try to sort out the whole mix up but the time it takes allows a friendship to grow for the men from very different backgrounds.
The supernatural element of this story is great! I love when we have all different supernatural creatures come together and this series involves several different kinds. We have a shifter and incubus relationship here and it's entertaining, enjoyable and heart warming to see what happens to our MC's.
I love our characters! Ted is just so adorable, you can't help by want to hug him and make him happy. He's shunned by his kind as he's weirdly sociable for a bear and loves being around people and his eagerness comes across really well. Quentin was brought up in upper society but doesn't fit in as an incubus. A past near death experience for a donor leads him to near enough stave himself of "food" but his meeting with Ted shows him what else can be found in life.
The connection between them shines through in the author's writing. I was drawn in right from the start, eager for their HEA and interested to see how they would make it through everything. The setting of the story, in the woods by a lake for Ted's home with a trek down to the local town of Dewton, is wonderfully described. I found it so easy to imagine myself in the location and definitely is a place I'd love to visit.
We have some great secondary characters, both supportive friends and one or two people we love to hate.
I highly recommend this book! I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series to see what happened to our missing spouses.
Greg's narration is perfect for these characters. I fell into the story so easily right from the start and was eager to listen to the story as quickly as possible.
