About this listen

A heart-warming story about starting all over again, for fans of Bridget Jones’ Diary, written by debut author Jasmine Dennison and narrated by Jessica Barden.

Sometimes you have to escape to be found.

Kate wasn’t expecting a proposal, but when Rob pushed the small velvet box across the table how could she not get her hopes up? Those hopes dashed by a pair of pearl earrings, Kate decides it’s time to hit reset on her life. This time next year, she’ll have the life, job, relationship of her dreams. But then Rob drops a bombshell: he wants to move to America, for work, and without Kate. Shattered and heart-broken, her mum’s “there’s still time, if you get a move on”, her best friend Sonia’s engagement news, and – best of all – her seven-year-old niece Ottilie’s thoughtful suggestion that “Auntie K could borrow Daddy to be the daddy for her baby” do not make her feel better…

Leaving the pieces of her old life behind, Kate retreats to her sister’s ramshackle farm, where handsome handyman Dan is a welcome distraction. But it soon becomes apparent that underneath the idyllic surface, not all is as it appears at the farm – and whilst Kate didn’t go there looking for a new beginning, she might not be the only one to find one…

Nice feel good easy to listen to story

The narration was a little off putting. The accent seemed to keep changing and it was a little monotone. The story itself was good if a little predictable. A pleasant listen all in all

The fall and rise of trapped and bored marketing manager Kate

Very slow.
Annoying characters. How did she put up with that irritating Rob for so long?
Ghastly new boss.
I’m not quite sure how her sister was going to fit in anything extra.
Kate seemed to be the only person who spoke to those children.
Misunderstandings galore.
I did finish it though!!

Good book ruined by the reader

The book is a nice happy story, simple and a bit obvious but I enjoyed it. Just. The reader nearly ruined it for me. Her accent wanders from Middle English to American through Scottish and heaven knows where else. Yes there were characters who she played with those accents but then she’d forget to change back when the dialogue changed to a different character. I found it really irritating

Easy listening

Lovely story and a happy ending, perfect 🫶. Recommend to hopeless romantics. It helps that I read it on my membership with audible for no extra cost

Entertaining and reassuring

This isn’t my normal listen but I wanted to try something new. Appreciating this was the author’s debut work, it’s certainly original. It takes a lot for me to laugh out loud but I was definitely smiling away in numerous parts of the book. I enjoyed the storytelling and some of the underlying themes- not everyone’s life is perfect, despite what they want you to think. The concepts of life’s pressure and expectations were beautifully brought to light whether via family, friends or indeed ourselves. It was also nice that the ‘rom’ part of the romcom was relatively light touch. This gave the book a nice balance so you could empathise with the main character’s life struggles. In the end I was surprised how much I liked it and hope the author is going to ‘go again’.

Narrator whispered throughout in a depressing monotone . Sweet story ruined.

I had to skip to end after ax few chapters because the reader ‘s voice was just unbearable . Very difficult to hear as so softly spoken , and depressing to listen to as tone was so dreary. Sweet story, thought , such a shame . I’d listen to this author again with different narrator.
