Idealistic parson's son Jim goes to sea thirsting for adventure as the mate of the pilgrim ship Patna. However, when disaster looms, Jim is persuaded by his crewmates to abandon the ship, leaving the vessel and hundreds of passengers to their fate. But with his life in ruins, Jim alone has the courage to face up to the public censure which follows, piquing the interest of Captain Marlow, who befriends Jim and relates the tale of the young man's attempts to come to terms with his guilt and make an honorable future for himself.

Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent (1907) is a tragic tale based on the themes of espionage, double agents, anarchism, and terrorism. The story is set in London in 1886 and deals with Mr. Verloc, who works as a spy for an unnamed country. When he becomes involved in an anarchist plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory, things go haywire, revealing an unholy mess that involves politicians, policemen, foreign diplomats, and London's high society.

"La laguna" è un racconto breve composto nel 1896 e pubblicato per la prima volta nel "Conrhill Magazine". La storia narra di un uomo bianco, riferito come "Tuan" (l'equivalente di Lord o Sir) che viaggia attraverso la foresta pluviale indonesiana. The Shadow Line tells the story of a young man whose dream to be a captain of his ship comes true accidentally. He should command a boat from Bangkok to Singapore filled with sick passengers. His crew gets infected by malaria, and he finds out the medicine necessary to save them is missing deliberately after a couple of days wandering in the sea with no wind in sight. His mate convinces him that the ghost of the previous captain, who before his death turned insane and wanted to take the ship down along himself and the crew, has cursed them.

Heart of Darkness centers around Marlow, an introspective sailor, and his journey up the Congo River to meet Kurtz, reputed to be an idealistic man of great abilities. Marlow takes a job as a riverboat captain with the Company, a Belgian concern organized to trade in the Congo. As he travels to Africa and then up the Congo, Marlow encounters widespread inefficiency and brutality in the Company’s stations. The natives of the region have been forced into the Company’s service, and they suffer terribly from overwork and ill treatment at the hands of the Company’s agents.

In the late 19th century, a sea captain on his first voyage in the Gulf of Siam, on an unfamiliar ship, with a crew of strangers, takes aboard a fugitive stowaway. He must conceal his presence from the sailors with whom he shares this ship, and so he and the stowaway become conspirators. The young captain must challenge his own morality and the sworn obligations of a sea captain. He must decide who he wants to be as a man and as a moral actor in the arduous undertaking of endeavoring to deliver this fugitive to safety.

Pubblicato a puntate dal 1899 al 1900, fu riconosciuto come un capolavoro mondiale della letteratura. Il romanzo è complesso nella sua narrazione: Lord Jim, un eroe definito "romantico" da Marlow, che è il narratore della storia (come in altri romanzi di Conrad, si tratta di una storia nella storia), partito come un adolescente in cerca di avventure, viene presto abbattuto dalla vita e costretto spietatamente a conoscere una sua debolezza.

Il romanzo fu pubblicato nel 1907. La trama trae spunto da un fatto realmente accaduto nel 1894: un'esplosione in Greenwich Park, probabilmente dovuta ad un fallito attentato anarchico. "L'agente segreto" è considerato uno dei primi romanzi moderni a trattare temi quali il terrorismo e lo spionaggio. Una Londra umida e nebbiosa fa da cornice affascinante all'attenta analisi psicologica dei personaggi, e la scrittura elaborata e mai banale di Conrad non delude mai.
