After two years and seven months biding her time on Anima, her home ark, it is finally time to act, to put what she has discovered in the Book of Faruk to use. When our heroine Ophelia is promoted to Vice-Storyteller by Farouk, the ancestral Spirit of Pole, she finds herself unexpectedly thrust into the public spotlight and her special gift is revealed to all. She knows how to read the secret history of objects, and there could be no greater threat to the nefarious denizens of her icy adopted home than this. Beneath the golden rafters of Pole’s capital, Citaceleste, she discovers that the only person she may be able to trust is Thorn, her enigmatic fiancé.

Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. She must leave all she knows behind and follow her fiancé to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted.

Dopo due anni e sette mesi passati a mordere il freno su Anima, la sua arca, per Ofelia è finalmente arrivato il momento di agire. In un universo composto da ventuno arche vive Ofelia, una ragazza timida, goffa e un po' miope ma con due doni particolari: può attraversare gli specchi e leggere il passato degli oggetti. Lavora come curatrice di un museo finché le Decane della città decidono di darla in sposa al nobile Thorn, della potente famiglia dei Draghi. Questo significa trasferirsi dalla sua arca "Anima" a una molto più fredda e inospitale chiamata "Polo", abitata da bestie giganti e famiglie sempre in lotta tra loro. Ma per quale scopo è stata scelta proprio lei?

Ophelia and Thorn arrive at the observatory of the Deviations, an institute shrouded in absolute secrecy and overseen by a sect of mystical scientists who secretly conduct terrifying experiments. There, they hope to discover truths that will halt the destruction and death and bring the world back into balance.

Les effondrements se multiplient, de plus en plus impressionnants : Babel, le Pôle, Anima… aucune arche n'est épargnée. Pour éviter l'anéantissement total il faut trouver le responsable. Trouver l'Autre. Mais comment faire sans même savoir à quoi il ressemble ? Plus unis que jamais, Ophélie et Thorn s'engagent sur des chemins inconnus où les échos du passé et du présent les mèneront vers la clef de toutes les énigmes.

Fraîchement promue vice-conteuse, Ophélie découvre à ses dépens les haines et les complots qui couvent sous les plafonds dorés de la Citacielle. Più Uniti che mai, Ofelia e Thorn approderanno all'osservatorio delle Deviazioni, un istituto avvolto dal segreto più assoluto e gestito da una setta di scienziati mistici in cui, dietro la facciata di una filantropica clinica psichiatrica, si cela un laboratorio dove vengono condotti esperimenti disumani e terrificanti. Ophelia wird zur Vize-Erzählerin am Hofe erkoren und glaubt sich damit endlich sicher. Doch es dauert nicht lange, und sie erhält anonyme Drohbriefe: Wenn sie ihre Hochzeit mit Thorn nicht absagt, wird ihr Übles widerfahren. Und damit scheint sie nicht die Einzige zu sein: Um sie herum verschwinden bedeutende Persönlichkeiten der Himmelsburg. Kurzerhand beauftragt Faruk Ophelia mit der Suche nach den Vermissten. Und so beginnt eine riskante Ermittlung, bei der es Ophelia mit manipulierten Sanduhren, gefährlichen Illusionen und zwielichtigen Gestalten zu tun bekommt.

Um die unwiederbringliche Zerstörung der Archen zu stoppen, muss so schnell wie möglich der Schuldige gefunden werden. Muss "der Andere" gefunden werden. Aber wie? Wo doch niemand auch nur weiß, wie er aussieht? Ophelia und Thorn sind so vereint wie nie.

Fast drei Jahre hat Ophelia ihren Mann Thorn nicht mehr gesehen. Doch eines Tages macht sie sich heimlich auf den Weg zur Arche Babel, um sich auf die Suche nach ihm zu begeben. In Babel angekommen, schleicht sich Ophelia in eine Schule ein, wo sie schnell zu einer der wenigen "Auserwählten" wird. Als eine Zensorin tot aufgefunden wird, die kurz vor ihrem Tod die Werke eines Kinderbuchautors verbrannt hat, erkennt Ophelia fassungslos, wie sehr sie selbst in diese tödliche Geschichte verstrickt ist.
