After the climate wars, a floating city was constructed in the Arctic Circle. Once a remarkable feat of mechanical and social engineering, it is now rife with corruption, and the population simmers with unrest. Into this turmoil comes a strange new visitor - a woman accompanied by an orca and a chained polar bear. She disappears into the crowds looking for someone she lost 30 years ago, followed by whispers of a vanished people who could bond with animals.

'Kid' Wolffe is an up-and-coming boxer in 1920s New York. An honest fighter's got little chance at success on the mob-controlled circuit—until ambitious lieutenant 'Hinky' Friedman starts making moves to take over her boss's business, and sees a use for the kid. Teitelstam is a struggling tattoo artist, whose natural talent for ink magic won't amount to much without formal training. So he's got no idea why Hinky would offer him 10 times what he's worth to come work for her.

Every once and a while the voice that's in and out of our hero's head assures, “Fear not, for I am with you”. That voice is what will be called Smith, a voice from ancient and potent times. That voice - at once droll, clever, mercurial, and deliciously brutal - is one of the many highlights of this lively adventure.
