Seeking refuge with a deluded cult is her latest bad decision but rescuing an injured woman in the snow is soon revealed to be a horrific mistake. Hazia endangers not just Raine, but the whole world: she's escaped from Redwinter, fortress-monastery of the Draoihn, the warrior magicians who answer to no king or queen of the land, but to their own Grand Master. They will stop at nothing to retrieve what she's stolen.

A sorceress cataclysm has hit the Range, the final defensive line between the Republic and the immortal Deep Kings. Tormenting red rains sweep the land, new monstrosities feed on fear in the darkness, and the power of the Nameless, the gods who protect the Republic, lies broken. The Blackwing captains who serve them are being picked off one by one, and even immortals have learned what it means to die. Meanwhile the Deep Kings have only grown stronger and are poised to deliver a blow that will finally end the war.

For Ryhalt Galharrow, working for Crowfoot as a Blackwing captain is about as bad as it gets - especially when his orders are garbled, or incoherent, or impossible to carry out. The Deep Kings are hurling fire from the sky, a ghost in the light known only as the Bright Lady had begun to manifest in visions across the city, and the cult that worship her grasp for power while the city burns around them.

Ryhalt hat sich dieses Leben nicht ausgesucht, vielmehr trieb ihn sein Pech in diese erbärmlichen Lebensumstände. Und er ist gut in dem was er tut, auch wenn er manchmal seiner Ehre nachtrauert, die er dem Pragmatismus geopfert hat. Da trifft er seine Jugendliebe wieder und er weiß: Für sie will er ein besserer Mensch sein. Doch das Schicksal - und die Götter - haben andere Pläne.
