  • Top 5 movie cars
    Jul 1 2024

Chris and Marty list their top 5 favourite cars in movies, discuss why they haven't seen two fo the biggest films of the summer yet, and Marty declares that rubbin' is racin' after watching NASCAR: Full Speed on Netflix.

But first, Youtube have upped the stakes in their war on ad-blockers by introducing adverts in line to videos. James May has recorded his last piece of voice over for the Grand Tour, says next special is out in September, and that is probably it for him in the car world. The F1 movie will be out June 2025! Marty has watched NASCAR: Full Speed on Netflix and rates it highly as a gateway to a world of racing he knew little about.

For our main discussion this episode, we follow The Smoking Tire podcast in our top 5 movie character cars!

In 'What has Henry Catchpole been upto this week?' the Gordon Murray T.50 meets its spiritual predecessor, the McLaren F1. A great film that changed our minds on the T.50.

Our episode picks lost all discipline this month, as Autoalex has picked up the cheapest - and possible worst - Ferrari 360 that Jeremy Clarkson once sat in. Equally the Top Dead Centre boys bought a very cheap, Max Power-era show car which can with interesting mods and even more interesting merch. However at the other end of the scale Horsepower Hunters went in-depth on the HWA 190 Evo not restomod in glorious nerdy detail!

  • Cool Cars on TV
    May 26 2024

Chris and Marty are back for a long discussion of the coolest car-adjacent TV shows, and a deep dive into CGI in films.

But first, more Senna news as Netflix announce a dramatic Senna series coming later in the year, and the manufacturer of the replica cars will sell you one too! Have we reached peak Senna? Tom Hartley Jnr has also shown off a collection of race used helmets too, including Senna's Donington '93 helmet!

Instead of a review, Chris and Marty discuss cars from TV. What did we miss? What other iconic TV cars are there?

In 'What has Henry Catchpole been driving this week?' it's a Blackpool tribute as the TVR Tuscan Speed Six hits 25 years so American can enjoy the smell of fibreglass and resin.

For what we have been watching this week - apart from lots of weird and wonderful TV clips with cars in - The Movie Rabbit Hole has started a big conversation about the use of 'no CGI' in movie marketing, and the subsequent VFX breakdowns including Gran Turismo. Is it no big deal, or a very big deal?

  • Rally Special (Stage)
    Apr 17 2024

In this rally-themed special stage of an episode, Chris and Martin review Audi vs. Lancia: Race for Glory, chat about the most famous Colin McRae onboard and wonder just how long Tuthill's Rally With No Name 2023 video will stay online before the copyright FIA exclude it for having a cheaty turbo.

But first we temporarily remove our bobble hats to discuss that maybe Amazon isn't done with the Grand Tour as production companies have been approached to pitch for the Grand Tour.

Whistles blaring and bobble hats replaced, we settle in to give our thoughts on Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia.

In 'What Has Henry Catchpole Been Upto This Week?' we stick with our theme and revisit some rally legends reborn in the Kimera EVO37 and the utterly delicious Prodrive P25.

Our joint Youtube pick this episode is the wonder Tuthill Porsche film of the Rally With No Name, which perfectly walks the line between sharing the fun of the event without becoming too much about the fun or the competition. Watch it now before it maybe gets pulled!

Inspired by the Collecting Cars podcast, we picked our desert island YouTube clips to watch over and over. Despite a whole list of amazing videos, Marty went with Henry Catchpole driving an Aston Martin N430 Vantage on the old Military Road. Chris went even further back to Chris Harris driving an F1 car in the near freezing cold at Silverstone and part 2. A great example of Chris putting the viewer vicariously in the experience, including having Martin Brundle on hand to help.

  • Sand Job, Lionheart and many interviews...
    Mar 19 2024

In this episode Marty talks about Dan Wheldon, Chris recommends some Drive to Survive episodes, and there are flying dildos.

But first, Dan Wheldon's life and legacy is coming to the documentary Lionheart.

Chris has watched Drive to Survive, and Marty hasn't. Is it worth a watch, and which episodes are worth your time? But both have watched Grand Tour presents Sand Job.

In 'What has Henry Catchpole been upto this week?' it's the F.A.T Ice Race in Aspen - or Goodwood on Ice - with some bizarrely rare and special cars raised up and given studded tyres.

For some reason, we're been drenched in interviews this month, with Ben Collins chatting with Top Gear mastermind Andy Wilman, while Dan and Andrew of The Intercooler talking really inside baseball with James May.

However, we couldn't avoid talking about Red Bull's challenge to build a drone that can keep up with an F1 car, which may change the way we see Formula cars on the limit. It's deeply impressive and looks like a flying dildo.

  • Michael Mann's Ferrari
    Feb 7 2024

Chris and Marty are back with a lengthy, waffly review of Michael Mann's Ferrari movie. Is it more than you can afford, pal? Listen to find out. Elsewhere in the episode, we talk about Brad Pitt's F1 movie filming at the Rolex 24 and Harry Metcalfe putting the farmer's welly into BMW's latest EV effort.

But first, the Brad Pitt F1 film was seen filming endurance racing scenes at the Daytona 24 hours. Also Andy Wilman shared a trailer for the new Grand Tour special A Sand Job on his Instagram, which comes out Feb 16th.

For the review, we look at Michael Mann's Ferrari.

In 'What has Henry Catchpole been upto this week?', Henry is back in his bobble-hatted, historically focussed wheel house with the mad Lancia Delta S4 Stradale

For his Youtube pick this week, Chris followed listening to a Smoking Tire to visiting the Vehicle Virgins Youtube channel and the McLaren Speedtail video. Marty went with Harry Metcalf's thorough review of the BMW i5 M60 X-Drive.

  • Farewell to TG and GT
    Jan 25 2024

In this episode of the Automovie Podcast, Chris and Martin return for 2024 to remember Top Gear and the Grand Tour as both disappear from our screens, and discuss the usual news and nonsense you've come to expect from two gibbering idiots who watch too much YouTube.

But first Chris puts his hands up and shares a mistake from the Gran Turismo review, while Marty shares his thoughts on the movie he's managed to see.

Looming over the car landscape since the last episode has been the end of Top Gear and the Grand Tour. Also Chris Harris has written a book!

Since our last episode Henry Catchpole has been driving the RML SWB Ferrari 250 GT tribute.

For our new combined Youtube picks we went with TG 2 - Cars and Stripes with Jack Rix and Jethro Bovingdon bringing American car content to the Top Gear channel.

For our channel pick, it's Driver 61, but specifically the Project Inversion series attempting to drive a formula car upside down!

  • Groan Turismo
    Sep 9 2023

In this episode, Chris and Marty chat about Sky's new documentary Williams & Mansell: Red 5, the nominations for the Motor Film Awards 2023 are out, and Chris braves the brazen product placement to review the new Gran Turismo movie.

But first in the news, the Oscars of our world - the Motor Film Awards - have their nominations announced. Michael Mann's Ferrari has released a first trailer and we wonder; can Adam Driver really become Enzo?

Chris and Marty both watched the twinned stories of Mansell and Williams in Red 5. Marty has also been watched B is for Build do boats, Ratarossa and SamCrac rebuilding a slightly charred F430, and some idiots doing bad stuff to a Ferrari. Chris broke out a podcast of Toto Wolff on Desert Island Discs, lots of Daily Driven Exotics (and their half hour of daily content!) and Chris Harris monstering the Tuthill 911K.

Our review for this episode is Gran Turismo. I missed watching Oppenheimer in IMAX for this.

In "What has Henry Catchpole been up to this week?" Chris and Marty actually meet up with Henry at the first live recording of The Intercooler podcast! Henry also drove an OEM+ Tolman Peugeot 205!

For his pick, Chris went with the ever excited train enthusiast Downie Live who attended on the Canadian GP with the Alpine F1 team! His channel pick is from the Motor Film Awards nominations with the young but beautifully produced Misha on Wheels channel.

Marty picked another from Larry Chen highlighting Singapore's car culture, and highlighted the continuing, interesting, varied work from Driftworks! (Also their brilliant, deep dish energy merch!)

  • Driven (no, not that one)
    Jul 19 2023

Chris and Marty are back! In this episode, we talk about the new F1 movie and its fake Apex Racing team, there's a mini-review of the latest Mission Impossible movie and Chris looks at 2018's Driven film about Jim Hoffman and John DeLorean.

But first, Apex Racing for the as yet unnamed F1 film is being filmed now during active Grand Prix weekends. We'd love to share The Race's great video on it, but F1 have copyright claimed it, so instead here's Martin Brundle chatting with Brad Pitt.

Sky Documentaries is now showing their latest Mansell and Williams film.

Since our last episode we've been watching The Grand Tour presents Eurocrash, Marty raves about Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 in IMAX, both have been enjoying Tavarish's P1 Rebuild and Chris loved George Russell in a Eurofighter Typhoon.

Following his successes in Ted Lasso, Chris reviews Jason Sudeikis's turn in Driven (Not that one).

In 'What has Henry Catchpole been upto this week?', Henry shares his thoughts on the new Aston Martin DB11, and Chris really, really likes his writing.

For his Youtube picks, Chris has picked a Larry Chen video meeting the German YouTuber JP Performance. For his channel, Chris has gone back to The Race for their quick, but insightful reporting.

Marty has chosen the latest interview between Doug deMuro and Alanis King discussing their automotive takes, and for his channel its long time Tavarish collaborator Jack Builds It.
