About this listen

Jesus Who? is an audiobook written and narrated by Tony Powell. It is a modern-day rhyme poem about the life of someone who lived over 2000 years ago. It seems too incredible for words that we should still be talking about the man they called Jesus at all. He built no great empire, was no statesman, politician, warrior, great explorer, or discoverer. For much of his formative years, he grew up in hiding as a refugee.

This was no rags-to-riches story either. He encouraged people to sell all their possessions and give the proceeds to the poor, a philosophy few would expect, welcome, or instinctively feel compelled to follow. Yes, Jesus’ short life has been a news story like no other, refusing to be ignored, declining to fade away as might reasonably be expected, defying all reason, logic, or expectation. It’s a life which has shaped the UK's culture more than any other person. It’s impossible to really understand modern Britain without knowing who he was. His philosophy and teaching go right to the heart of the nation’s legal and political system, shaping our laws over centuries. The Rule of Law, that bedrock of a peaceful, harmonious, and civilised society we cherish, is braced on all sides by his principles of fairness, respect for authority, and love or regard for one’s neighbor.

To accept a Christian culture and values is not the same thing as practicing a Christian faith. You can accept it without ever stepping inside a church, praying, or believing in God or heaven. But you do need to understand the values for which he stood. I hope my poem will be one that young people will appreciate and enjoy, encouraging a better understanding of what lies at the heart of our nation’s culture.
