  • Summary

  • "A funny and moving story of immigrants, beautifully written, at a time when it's needed the most." - Jon Ronson

Funny, sad and brilliantly human, this timely original series follows five friends – lovable but sometimes infuriating - as they make a life for themselves in New York City. The tie that binds them? They are all immigrants, struggling to find their place in an increasingly hostile America.

Sadie, fresh from her small hometown in Ireland tries out for the elusive O1 visa – meaning she has three months to prove she is an ‘alien of extraordinary ability.’ She joins a collective called ‘Nature Fans’, whose members are also on a clock, all trying to figure out how to stay in the country. Together they alternately fight and work the system, growing close in the process.

Brother and sister Rodrigo and Erika are from a mixed status family and have wonderful and busy lives in NYC. Rodrigo, desperate not to go back to Mexico but sick of living in the shadows, gets politically active. Tam is smart, handsome and Haitian, when he finds out he’s about to lose his legal status, he uses his charm to find a marriage to save him. Mazen, the loveliest Lyft driver you’re likely to meet, awaits his asylum interview and tries to forget about his life back in Syria, only to discover that he needs to stay connected or his heart will break.

The stakes couldn’t be higher – an adventure story, a love story, a story of borders and the people who cross them - can they stay in this country they call home?

Spectacular

I loved it. Well created storyline, engaging and with a clear focus on characterisation.

Narrators were excellent and really elevated the overall story with convincing performances.

I can't believe it's free!

Engaging and amusing

Very beautiful and relatable... Definitely worth reading. I particularly loved Sadie and Mazin (not sure if I got the spelling right).

Excellent Series Exploring Immigration

Wow! I am so proud of Audible releasing this series. it is a much needed exploration into the state of immigration in the U.S.. The characterisation is on point. The voice actors were so good that I was transferred into the world of their joys and struggles. Highly recommended!

Trump's America.

I was surprised by the quality of this audio production considering I received the audio as a thanks consideration for being a member of Audible. The production was very funny in parts but it also had a very serious side to it that resonated with the listener, especially in these times when immigration is such a huge issue today in Trump's America.
I particularly liked the character of Sadie in that she was Irish, and as an Irishman myself she was the one character I gravitated towards. Some of the other characters were also memorable, in particular Mazan and Baptiste. Even the music at the end of each chapter added something to the story and I listened to every second, afraid lest I miss something.
I can see this story lending itself to a sequel and it ended in a way I wasn't expecting.
Aliens of extraordinary ability is a social, satirical piece that speaks well of the times we live in and I can do nothing but recommend it as an excellent listen.

Very Good Audible.

Really loved this Audible story. Tells the struggle of people surviving against the system threatening arrest/deportation due to illegal status. May not highlight in entirety the complete struggles of real 'aliens' but a touch of the issues some people go through.
