Summary

Winner, 2017 APA Audie Awards - Original Work

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi.

One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know. But it changes everything: war, crime, daily life.

Tony Valdez is a Dispatcher - a licensed, bonded professional whose job is to humanely dispatch those whose circumstances put them in death's crosshairs, so they can have a second chance to avoid the reaper. But when a fellow Dispatcher and former friend is apparently kidnapped, Tony learns that there are some things that are worse than death and that some people are ready to do almost anything to avenge a supposed wrong.

It's a race against time for Valdez to find his friend before it's too late...before not even a Dispatcher can save him.

Critic reviews

"The hero of this book is narrator Zachary Quinto, who makes a potentially confusing story simple and compelling. With a voice that sounds trained, he reaches right through the speakers and grabs listeners, making them want—no, need—to listen." (AudioFile)

"Quinto has a perfect hardboiled noir manner, which is exactly what you’d want for Valdez." (Locus Magazine)

Great book....one can't get enough of.

Excellent stuff, an absolute unchartered minefield of overlapping ethics, science and spirituality. Outstanding narration by the voice artists, my only niche of a criticism is that the story could have been longer and more complex addressing the theology of life rather than just a speedy thrill fill. Much appreciated.

Brilliant Enjoyable.

This was a brilliant listen. Intriguing, a possible look into the ‘future’ maybe? Great storytelling without all the overdoing. Loved it.

Thoroughly enjoyed, excellent narration.

The narration was excellent. The story was interesting and moved at a good pace. Its been in my 'to listen' pile for a long time, there's a few books on there that I look at and think, not today...... But I'm really glad I finally started it.

Not my cup of tea but excellently done.

I'm not a fan of short stories but this one of the best I've read. Well written, good characterisation, well rounded. 4 for the story is just personal choice.

A short but good novel.

The story is good, it is missing a plausible explanation on why things are happening as they are. It is very well narrated which makes it enjoyable to listener.

Another chance to die

What does Zachary Quinto bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A fabulous voice and perfect narration

Any additional comments?

In a future world, where murder is practically impossible, we meet Tony Valdez. Tony is a dispatcher – a licenced, bonded professional who can safely dispatch you if you are on death’s doorstep, so that you can return and make different choices. Now, Valdez finds that he must, unwillingly, aid in a police investigation into the disappearance of a fellow Dispatcher and one-time friend.
Can Tony’s dealings with the darker actions of others, help him to save his friend before it is too late?
A mysterious and well written story till the end.

Short, Enigmatic and Enjoyable

To write such a spellbinding enigmatical short story that by itself is complete, satisfying and enjoyable, is truly an artful accomplishment. This book will appeal to the sci-fi and crime thriller enthusiasts all alike, even those who love just plain fiction. I prefer longer books to read but I wouldn't add an extra word to this one and I appreciated the time listening to it; it presented a short but memorable experience. I'd highly recommend this read.
