Gary Karkofsky is an ordinary guy with an ordinary life living in an extraordinary world. Supervillains, heroes, and monsters are a common part of the world he inhabits. Yet, after the death of his hometown's resident superhero, he gains the amazing gift of the late champion's magical cloak. Deciding he prefers to be rich rather than good, Gary embarks on a career as Merciless: The Supervillain Without Mercy. But is he evil enough to be a villain in America's most crime-ridden city? Gary soon finds himself surrounded by a host of the worst of Falconcrest City's toughest criminals. Supported by his long-suffering wife, his ex-girlfriend turned professional henchwoman, and a has-been evil mastermind, Gary may end up being not the hero they want but the villain they need.

excellent take on a subject that is overly saturated in comics. absolutely brilliant and funny.

anti villains are great

The language symbol in the puns ample. Satisfying, imaginative considering the saturation of the market with superpowers with dry humor where I cut myself laughing out loud in the car While driving. I guess it is superhero fiction for those that are fed up with superheroes.

refreshingly Grounded for the fantasy it contains

Merciless, the villain without any mercy. That should sum up the main character, who doesn't seem to be too bright, but does have some moral principles which almost make him into a hero. He received the cloak of a superhero when that hero died and now wants to use it to be a villain, except he's not too good at being a villain because of those morals. Unfortunately there are a lot of other villains around, and super heroes, including one guy whose powers, vehicle, clothing, etc are "ultra"-, i.e. ultra-speed, ultra-vision, etc. He does get apprehended, of course, and sent to the prison for super heroes (I won't say where, that would be a spoiler). Then things get really bad when there is a prison break.

Definitely worth listening to. I am looking forward to the next book.

Brilliant! Filled to the brim with action, sarcasm, ridiculousness and just pure brilliance!
Really impressed and had me grinning most of the way through!
And Jeffrey does a great job with the narration and really brings out the Witt!
Really looking forward to the next in the series.
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

Fantastic listen. Great narration of an unusual take on the genre. Unfair to compare to Pratchett but a dark cynical and funny look at the super hero world. Enough to keep the geeks happy and not to much to put a first timer off! Looking forward to the rest of the series!

So glad I stopped at this!!
