Ain’t no Toby Longworth

Great planetary intrigue story read by a narrator better suited to childrens stories. Shame as I noticed he reads the next in the series too.

Great introduction to 40k

Not too complicate story for newcomer, however there are so many titles and names that could get newcomer confuse.

An enguaging story well narrated

I read this series of books some years ago now and when I saw the black library audio was on Audible hoped it would be there, but no luck. Then I spotted them recently during one of the innumerable sales and snapped up the first two without a second thought.

Having just completed this first in the series, I am happy to say it is a solid story with one or two interesting twists and, for me at least, well narrated. I noticed some reviews found Bruce's narration poor, but I have listened to a hundred or more audio books now and found this one easy to listen to, so no complaints from me.

The story is not perfect but it contains a good mixture of politics and action. It can get tiring when the books spend too much time with the space marines and their experiences (and battles) and I appreciate it when the story takes time to build up a variety of main characters in their own settings before throwing them all in to the mix for what is usually an explosive finale. Here we find ourselves following an Adept of the Imperium, the Planetary Governor, opposition leaders, the Adeptus Arbites as well as Uriel Ventris and his Space Marines as the story unfolds.

Overall a book I would recommend and will be listening to again in the future.

Incredible narrator

Hire this narrator for more books. Give McNiel less important jobs. He's good for workdbuilding, not paying off big plot points.

Ultramarines being Ultramarines

The story is no nail biter full of mystery and Machiavellian machinations but it is a story of the boys in blue doing what they do best and we get inquisitor in disguise too, I enjoyed it but it not one I would listen to again, the narrator was new to me and he did a good job with all the right intonations and inflections

Great Book, Great Reader

Always loved this story and Bruce MacKinnon did a brilliant job of bringing it to life. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I wish Heavy Entertainment produced all audiobooks.

A decent Ultramarine story

The cover says it's a Uriel Ventris story but he doesn't really feel like the main protagonist driving the narrative forward. Also could have used an additional female narrator for all the female characters. The main female character sounded like an old lady when she isn't meant to be one. Bruce does the male voices very well though. Although it's strange when you know the character is speaking through a voxcaster but the narrator's voice doesn't have the effect applied. If you have this book and you love 40k then I think reading the text version will be more immersive.

Despite reviews

Despite all the negative reviews on the narrator, I personally enjoyed his narrating. I am only beginning the Warhammer 40K lore and I must say I have really enjoyed this book and excited to crack on with the rest of the series!
