Outlander: A family tree of the Highland saga

Outlander: A family tree of the Highland saga
audible-outlander-family-tree

Claire's time travel across centuries and continents leads to a complex network of relationships and families. With the Outlander family tree, you can keep closer track of it.

Former battlefield nurse Claire Beauchamp could not imagine that an ancient stone circle in the year 1946 would bring her directly into the heart of Scotland in the 18th century. Nor did her inventor Diana Gabaldon expect her eight-volume Outlander series to be a best seller. She weaves romance, fantasy, historical drama, and family saga into the perfect genre mix. Tying all these genres together is the great love between two people from two very different worlds. The family and friends around Jamie and Claire include surprising relationships, ancestry and descent. The Outlander family tree brings clarity to these complex family relationships.

Outlander, Book 1

The story of Outlander’s protagonist, Claire, is deceptively complex. She accidentally travels back in time to 18th century Scotland, where she meets a muscle-bound Highlander who captures her heart despite everything. Jamie is courageous and brave, but deeply sensitive and empathetic. It’s here that we find out that writer Diana Gabaldon is no stickler for familiar gender roles.

Claire works as a nurse on the front line during World War II, while her husband’s war work keeps him at home. When she meets Jamie and is compelled to marry him for her own protection, she has no problem asserting her influence over their marriage.

As Claire and Jamie’s relationship deepens, the world they share together grows. Their connections to their past and their branched families become increasingly important. You’ll soon find yourself in a world full of intrigue, passion and acts of revenge. Following all these characters and their timelines is not easy. This Outlander family tree will help you to keep track of the characters up to the sixth volume, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

Highland Saga: Important figures and their history

Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser

James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser

James’ parents are Brian and Ellen Fraser. Ellen brings four children into the world and dies during a stillbirth. Jamie's sister, Jenny Fraser Murray, is close to the hearts of many Outlander fans as she powers through her life with seven children and husband, Ian Alastair Murray.

Brianna Randall

The love of Claire and James leads to the birth of Fergus Claudel Fraser, the stillborn Faith Fraser, and daughter Brianna Randall. Why does the girl have the same surname as Claire's 1946 husband, Frank? You’ll have to find out for yourself.

From deep-sea biology to writing: Outlander author Diana Gabaldon

Even as a child, Diana Gabaldon knew that she was a good storyteller. As a young adult, however, she wasn’t sure how to make it profitable. That's why she followed her conservative parents’ wishes and pursued something reliable to fall back on. She was interested in wildlife and studied deep-sea biology and zoology at the University of Arizona, where she is now an honorary professor. Why did she decide to write a novel at 35, and what does the sci-fi series Doctor Who have to do with its setting in 18th century Scotland? Diana Gabaldon provides answers in an exclusive interview for Audible.

In 1991, she had already written a best seller with her first Outlander novel, which was celebrated not only for its gripping storyline but also for boosting the Scottish tourism industry. The books – and the TV adaptation of the first of six seasons, so far – increased the number of visitors at the film locations by 50 per cent.
