My family traveled all over the world, staying 1-3 years at a time in Turkey, Germany, Israel and Chile, immersing ourselves the language and culture of each place. Like the family in my novel, Blue Woman Burning, we drove from Santiago, Chile to New York in Dodge Dart sedan, getting stuck in the Altiplano and nearly getting arrested as spies. Though Caucasian with ancestors dating back to before the American revolution on both sides, I was raised multiculturally, and belong to a "third culture”—being neither from here nor there. This is one reason I write fiction that looks at the world through a magical realist lens. I’m a lover of all things bent but beautiful. I have been teaching fiction writing, public speaking, and sci-fi and fantasy at SUNY Adirondack for nearly 30 years. I earned an Award for Creative Activity and was promoted to Distinguished Professor of English. My stories and essays have appeared in more than 15 magazines including The North American Review, Big Lucks and the Collagist. They have won a few modest wards such Wigleaf Top 50 and the Adirondack Center’s People’s Choice Award. Writing is how I pray.
