IT’S JUST NOT HERS TO TELL.

When failed writer June Hayward witnesses her rival Athena Liu die in a freak accident, she sees her opportunity… and takes it.

So what if it means ‘borrowing’ her identity?

And so what if the first lie is only the beginning…

Finally, June has the fame she always deserved. But someone is about to expose her…

What happens next is entirely everyone else's fault.

Coming of author story

This story somehow reminded me of coming of age teenage drama style but with layers and layers of complexity and spot on narrative.

The book was much lighter comparing to the authors other works yet my girl R. F. Kuang throwing shades at publishing industry.

a novel, novel?

loved it. a protagonist you can understand, even when you're so shocked by them! Not easy.

Lived up to the hype

Absolutely loved this. One thing I love more than an unreliable narrator is an unlikeable unreliable narrator. I highly recommend this, great performances from the narrator and such an interesting and well told story. Lots of satire, social commentary and a good dose of mystery thriller. Kept me hooked

Brilliant narration

I loved the narration of this book, it was 100%. The story is intriguing, it did sag a little in the final third and I’m still unsure whether I like the ending or not but was a good holiday listen.

Underwhelming after weeks of hype

This story started strongly but became boring quickly. By chapter 18 I was looking for the end. Maybe just not for me.

Brilliant narration, interesting but chilly story

This is a clever novel which casts a cold and cynical light on the publishing industry and the malign grip of social media. But it is strangely unsatisfying and I think it’s because the characters are so unlikeable and lacking in depth of portraiture. However the narration is brilliant. So good with the different voices, wonderful with Athena’s transatlantic English cool. So good with the tension and momentum. Well done.

Compelling performance of pure poison

🧡 I could spend hours unpicking Juniper Song. Her blind ambition, self-obsession and victim mentality alone are a mass of hot messiness. Add in her cowardice and we’re off to the stars. One of my top hateable characters and a joy to despise.

SOUNDBITE

🎧 In a story so heavily focused on the main character, the narrator was crucial and Helen Laser was fantastic. Listening to her as June was like walking a tightrope. A brilliantly nuanced depiction of instability.

Good stuff

Loved it. Very readable. Narration brilliant. First book I have this year where I haven't liked the characters but still found the book compelling!

It was ok but not amazing

The story is self contained and makes sense and is interesting but it’s not an amazing memorable book. It’s a bit of an Instagram book, I won’t be thinking about it. Very self driven. Performance was great.

Interesting read

I enjoyed this book, and wasn’t quite sure where it would go. Interesting perspective- I’m not an avid reader and haven’t read many books where I feel uncomfortable with the narrators thoughts so was a nice change!
The performance got a bit annoying at times, but that was maybe because I didn’t love June as a narrator.
