Summary

The first in a blistering new trilogy from Jen Williams, acclaimed author of British Fantasy Award-nominated Copper Cat trilogy. Epic fantasy for fans of Robin Hobb and Jay Kristoff's Nevernight.

Jen Williams, acclaimed author of The Copper Cat trilogy, featuring The Copper Promise, The Iron Ghost and The Silver Tide, returns with the first in a blistering new trilogy.

The great city of Ebora once glittered with gold. Now its streets are stalked by wolves. Tormalin the Oathless has no taste for sitting around waiting to die while the realm of his storied ancestors falls to pieces - talk about a guilt trip. Better to be amongst the living, where there are taverns full of women and wine.

When eccentric explorer Lady Vincenza 'Vintage' de Grazon offers him employment, he sees an easy way out. Even when they are joined by a fugitive witch with a tendency to set things on fire, the prospect of facing down monsters and retrieving ancient artefacts is preferable to the abomination he left behind. But not everyone is willing to let the Eboran empire collapse, and the adventurers are quickly drawn into a tangled conspiracy of magic and war. For the Jure'lia are coming, and the Ninth Rain must fall....

Amazing world building and storytelling

Absolutely fantastic book.
I found a little slow to get going but then I really appreciated the depth of world building later on in the story.
Narration was great but did occasionally feel a bit like an adult reading a story to a child - however, I can forgive and get over that for the quality of everything else!

Good solid book

Like other reviewers said, it's a slow start but gets better. Listened to the book in a few days so thinking on it, it gets a lot better.
Great idea for a story, read other books with similar ideas but this goes further. Excited to read the next book. Only gave 4 stars for story as I didn't like the character development of some of the main characters but gave five overall as I think that is probably just me being picky.

Slow to start, but!

Slow to start, as with a few other reviews I nearly gave up initially, I am glad I did not. It is not my favourite book or even the best one I have read recently, however it is a very entertaining one, this is why I read fantasy.

Perfect

Every now and then you find a gem of a book and this book is one of those gems. The combination of Jen Williams's excellent story and jot Davies's narration is perfect. They are both new to me but are now amongst my favourites. Already started book 2. Perfect.

So original - genre fusion at its best

Brilliant story that doesn’t pause for a second and the mix of genres, I found, kept me guessing at where this could go.

Narration was also superb - one of the very few narrators I have heard actually shout when the story required it.......excellent :)

Stunning and inventive

it has been very hard for me to get into new authors, so entrenched I have been in my love of Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Terry Pratchett, James Barclay and David Gemmell.

I have now added Jen Williams to that list. I loved every moment of this story, and eagerly await my next credit so I can get my hands on the second book.

immediately fascinating characters, a believable and well envisioned fantasy world, and a story that made me want to just keep listening added up to make this one of the best things I've listened to in a long time.

I have to give a mention to the excellent narrator also. who brought the characters truly to life.

Stick with it!

This story has a slow build, and at the halfway mark I left it for a bit to go back to some Sanderson. By the time it ended though, I immediately got the next one because I'm now invested! It has classic Fantasy-vibes, and while nothing in it is particularly life-changing sometimes good, classic fantasy is all you need. Give the book some time to build slowly, I'm looking forward to where it's going!
