Summary

The Chuzzlewits are a family divided by money and selfishness; even young Martin, the eponymous hero, is arrogant and self-centred. He offends his grandfather by falling in love with the latter’s ward, Mary, and sets out to make his own fortune in life, travelling as far as America - which produces from Dickens a savage satire on a new world tainted with the vices of the old. Martin’s nature slowly changes through his bitter experience of life and his enduring love for Mary. Martin Chuzzlewit is one of Dickens’s most humorous and satirical novels, and it contains two great comic creations: the hypocrite Pecksniff and the drunken nurse Sarah Gamp.

Lovely narration of wonderful Dickensian characters

On from the heading though, my stamina waned while slogging through a number of chapters. Just make sure you’ve time to savour the pros. Sean Barret’s reading deserves an award…. Fantastic.

Wonderful narration.

Sean Barrett deserves every accolade for his marvellous performance in this narration. My thanks to him - and Charles Dickens of course - for 33 hours of pure entertainment.

A Lovely Book To Listen to.

Another so well written, brilliant plots, full of humour and great characters. Charles Dickens was a genius and I've definitely fallen in love with his writing. My favourite character has to be Tom Pinch, a true salt of the earth, kind and utterly selfless person. I also liked Mark Tapley too. But the funniest characters has to be Mr Pecksniff and Mrs Gamp! Dickens was so perceptive of people and most of his characters were based on real people he knew. A fabulous reading by Sean Barrett, he has such a lovely rich voice to listen to, reads with so much interest and fabulous voices, especially Mr Pecksniff and Mrs Gamp! All in all a lovely story to listen to. Highly recommend!

Good but not one of Dickens' best

Very well read and a good audio book. There are much better stories from the author though, in my opinion.

An Excellent Listen

Martin Chuzzlewit takes a while to get going. The first half can be a bit grating, the humour rather obvious. But the second half more than makes up for that, very funny and with some great writing.

Sean Barrett’s narration is faultless, utterly superb. His American accents bring the foreign scenes to life, his Mrs Gamp is a scream and he even distinguishes between feeble old Martin and reinvigorated old Martin. Thoroughly recommended.
