Summary

Meet Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. He's a murder detective. He's brilliant; he's intense; he's instinctive. And yet there are rumours that DCI Luther is bad - not corrupt, but tormented.

The first in a new series of novels featuring DCI John Luther takes us into Luther's past and into his mind. It is the story of the case that tore his personal and professional relationships apart, and propelled him over the precipice.

Weirdly present tense

So obviously written by a scriptwriter, this doesn’t read like a novel but like a screenplay. It works though, once you get used to it.

Only really worthwhile if you’ve seen the series - but a good fill in of background.

excellent

Luther is a very adult title and is very graffic and genuinely shocking. However it is also riveting from start to end a truly gripping and exciting story which is performed brilliantly.. I loved this book.but it's not for the faint of heart.

Gripping and compelling.

The only criticism I have is the narrators voice for Luther was....well...not right is all I can say, the rest however was superb. The story is compelling and sad, with hints of "oh my gosh!!!!"

Spoiled by the narrator

I have always enjoyed the BBC series of Luther so I was delighted to see the book on audible. However it is spoiled by the narrator and sadly I haven't finished listening to it because his voice is so annoying!! Really disappointed as the story so far is good but the narrator is spoiling it for me. :(

Brilliant!

Very harrowing in places, especially the graphic descriptions of violence and abuse against children and animals, nearly gave up because of it but really glad I didn't. I would definitely read more, hoping there's another one soon!

Really gripping story but.....

very strong language and swearing makes it impossible to listen to while children or others in the same vicinity - I like to listen to Audiobooks in the car or while cleaning the house. It is brutal and very disturbing as you’d expect from a Luther story. Now that I know what to expect I can manage my listening and I would buy another, but it will take longer to get through than other books!

Extruded violence

I’m a Midsummer Murder, Jonathan Creek kind of crime lover and I found this too rough.
It was very well written, for what it is, but I gave the story four starts because of the indulgence in making the killer as horrific as possible.
I found the blood, guts and blatant respect for life almost pornographic. I seriously debated wether I should listen to the end or just delete the book.
Luther felt very real but the killer felt supernaturally horrific- life a villain from a horror film.
