Summary

Tis’ the season to get trollied!

Mummy has always loved Christmas. Sure, the kids turn into demons, the dinner gets burnt to a crisp and Aunt Louisa’s general staggering inappropriateness sends Mummy reaching for the nearest maximum-strength festive tipple, but nevertheless, for her, Christmas is always special.

This year, she wants nothing more than to perfectly fig up the pudding and sit by the fire reading aloud from A Christmas Carol to a rapt, rosy-cheeked audience. But, just like all Mummy’s best-laid plans, this year’s Festive Vision is in danger of being totally derailed by her chaotic family. There’s not much chance of any action under the mistletoe, and the kids are just not playing ball.

Can Mummy find her silver lining after all and bring the whole family together for one moment of harmony, so they can finally proclaim ‘Verily You Are the Queen of Christmas’? Or should she get stuck into the festive spirits and just let it all go?

10/10

Laugh out loud funny and teary eyed sentimental moments. I love these books and the narrator. This was no exception to the usual excellence.

"Laughing Through the Festive Chaos: A Review of Gill Sims' 'My Mummy Christmas'

Gill Sims’ “My Mummy Drinks at Christmas” is an exceptional read that blends humor and insight into the challenges of parenting during the festive season. As a fan of Sims’ “White Mummy Drink” series, I was eagerly anticipating this book, and it did not disappoint.

What sets this book apart is its relatable portrayal of parenting struggles during Christmas, especially as children grow older and more independent. Sims masterfully navigates the dynamics of a modern family, addressing the complexities with a touch of humor that makes the narrative both engaging and real.

The addition of hippy relatives with their unconventional child-rearing philosophies adds a delightful twist, offering a refreshing contrast to the protagonist’s experiences. These characters are not just amusing but also thought-provoking, as they challenge traditional norms in a light-hearted manner.

Sims’ skill in weaving these stories is commendable. Her sharp wit and keen observations make “My Mummy Drinks at Christmas” laugh-out-loud funny in many places. The scenarios are so vividly depicted that they strike a chord with anyone familiar with the joys and trials of parenting.

In conclusion, “My Mummy Christmas” is a highly entertaining read that captures the essence of family life during the holiday season. Its humor, relatability, and insightful reflections on parenting make it a must-read. I’m surprised that television production companies haven’t yet jumped at the opportunity to adapt these books into a series - they certainly have all the ingredients for a successful show.

By far the best yet

This book is a "coming of age" novel. Gill Sims has always been very funny with incisive skills when observing the generally selfish, self agrandising and pompous nature of human interaction. She has written books in which we can laugh with and occasionally at the main characters sharing their frustrations with the every day life of normal Mums.

This book is a little different. It tackles some more difficult subjects and does it well. It's more introspective and almost a collection of Christmas stories rather than a continuous narrative. It's all the better for it. In this book Gill shows us that as well as being humorous, she can go deeper.

For fans of Gill old and new, this is a corker.
