Summary

Book 7 in The Long War series from the master of historical fiction, Christian Cameron

When the dust settled and the blood dried after the Battle of Plataea, Greeks might have thought that their freedom was secured. But before the corpse of the Great King's general was cold, Athens and Sparta began to bicker over dividing up the spoils.

After an autumn of victory, it's a long cold winter among the burned cities and destroyed shrines of Greece, and a hungry spring. And when Arimnestos goes to sea to cruise the Persian-held coasts, he finds that Persia is still not beaten... and that old alliances are now fraying.

Is the impossible true? Would the Spartans rather see Athens destroyed than Persia defeated? And who will save the cities of Ionia from the Great King's wrath?

It's the spring of 478BCE, and the Long War isn't over yet.

Fantastic addition to a beloved series

I was not expecting a new addition to this wonderful book series and another story from Ari. The story takes many emotional turns and I had to re-listen to many immediately because of how wonderfully written they were! I read this series in the book form about a decade ago and kept up with the releases, but Peter Noble does a great job narrating! I hope this series will continue, I will always be here to enjoy it!

STUNNING! ABSOLUTELY BLOODY STUNNING!

Like the author, I have spent many hours and indeed days on the battlefields in Greece with text book and maps to hand reading the histories and and living it in my minds eye. These novels have added salt, sauce and spice to those experiences.
They are accurate history magnificently blended with plausible fiction. Other than Tolkien, I have never been better entertained by the combination of a master story teller and perfect narrator. How the latter remembers all the characters and their different voices is .... beyond belief. He is a credit to his craft.
Thank you so much men; rarely have I spent a more interesting, entertaining and educational 126 hours. A very satisfied Mick the Hick.😊
On to the next.😁

Compelling

A fascinating story close enough to history to take us back to ancient Greece, with an excellent speaker.

My first disappointment

Although it was a welcome surprise to find another book in this great series, I found this to be a disappointment. There wasn't much of a story. It was short and almost as if this was a filler. A lot of repetition of previous scenarios. It takes Ari's story forward, but it could have been an abridged part of a much longer book that includes the signalled adventures into the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. A shame really. Great narration as ever so still worth a listen but was expecting much more from Mr C.
