Summary

The Wayward Bus travelled the back roads through the lush California countryside. Its driver was a man of the land - lusty, hot blooded, and uninhibited. On the bus was a girl who danced at stag parties, a travelling salesman strictly out for fun, a boy coming into manhood, and a college girl pursuing her secret, passionate quest. This is a story of crisis and passion, of love and longing.

A Great Story

It's been years since I've read any Steinbeck and I'd forgotten how good he is. There is so much detail of the surroundings and the characters are so richly described, right down to the pesky fly!
A pleasure to read!

A Classic.

A very funny and beautifully observed story around several disparate characters brought together on a bus journey. Evocative of the time and place as you would expect from John Steinbeck. Although perhaps not as well known as some of his other novels, this was superb, pacey, full of wisecracks and poignant moments. Great narration made it a compellingl listen.

sublime

Steinbeck has been my favourite author for 50 years now and I had few books left to read or listen to. I have saved this book up for decades and it was worth the wait. This is one of, if not the best of his writings and shows his vast understanding of the psychology of ordinary people.

It’s a great book but Richard Poe is a genius. A very enjoyable 9 hours.

Not one of his best, perhaps

Good narration, interesting insight into ordinary people's lives. No one is what they seem to be

Intriguing!

Great book simple story well told and beautifully constructed.
Colourful characters each with their own sub plot.
I'd not heard of this title from Steinbeck but loved it.

A Steinbeck Character Study

A well read story of a simple bus journey that has a few problems and a interesting mix of passengers. This isn't a epic story but kept me interested all the way through.
