An unusual way to start a series
To start a crime series with a book that gives you quite a small glimpse of the central detective is definitely something that bit different. I heard about the Simon Serraller series via one of my favourite Radio 4 programmes "A Good Read" and the panel's discussion really made me prick up my ears. I was delighted to discover that the series was on audible and believe the whole experience has been made even better by an absolutely tremendous reader that I have not come across before. Full marks to Steven Pacey. I became absolutely wrapped up in the characters of this story, in the little details of their lives, some of which of course cleverly mirror your own. I think I am right in remembering another reviewer saying the end was poor and I too feel it lost its way a little. Having said that the main element of the 'end' will I am sure surprise you as much as it did me. I certainly hadn't seen it coming.

Stunning
I read all this series when they were first published. Hearing this beautifully performed version reminded me of the quality and beauty of the writing, the fine characters and enthralling plot. Just wonderful.

Intriguing
This was my first foray into the Simon Serraillier series and I have to say I am hooked. In another time the plot might have been implausible, but in modern times... A very good listen.

Completely Captivating
My first Susan Hill book, and boy was I so not disappointed! Brilliantly put together from start to finish and throughout real edge of the seat listening, never wanted to put this one down or stop listening for very long, I looked forward when I could snatch a few moments here and there to hear a bit more each time. Its labelled as a crime thriller and whilst that is true its much more than that, you get a real sense of each character, their life within the town, family, Simon Serrailler initially doesnt appear to be the main focus of the story which is surprising but gives good grounding to the investigation which in itself was difficult to guess on the outcome of until near the end. I must mention Steven Pacey here as well, beautifully narrated, totally brings the characters and background to life in a stunning performance. Hill and Pacey as a duo provide one of the most thrilling books I've read in ages, 6 stars !!

Slow starter
It took the first two or three hours before anything much happened. Hard to stick with it. Didn’t like the ending much

ok
an ok listen.. the narrator was excellent but the story was to drawn out.. not a great sign when your looking to see how much longer and when 2 hrs start fast forwarding, and can do so without losing the plot line..
