Summary

An impossible murder behind a locked door. Can DCI Oldroyd find the key to the mystery?

Lord Redmire’s gambling habit has placed him in serious debt. Determined to salvage his fortune by putting Redmire Hall on the map, the aristocrat performs an impossible locked-door illusion on live TV. But as the cameras roll, his spectacular trick goes fatally wrong....

Special guest DCI Jim Oldroyd has a front-row seat, but in all his years with the West Riding Police he’s never witnessed anything like this. He sees Redmire disappear—and then reappear, dead, with a knife in his back.

As Oldroyd and DS Stephanie Johnson soon discover, nearly everyone at the event had a reason to resent the eccentric lord. But how did the murderer get into the locked room—or out, for that matter?

When the only other person who knew the secret behind the illusion is brutally silenced, the case begins to look unsolvable. Because as Oldroyd and Johnson know, it’s not just a question of who did it and why—but how?

Magical!

I thoroughly enjoy this series by J.R. Ellis. The novels are well plotted, and, even though some of the smaller characters are stereotypes, I feel invested in the more rounded character of our protagonist and his family life. Very good reading by Michael Page.

An easy listen.

Another outing for the Yorkshire Detectives Oldroyd and Johnson. This is a classic Locked Room mystery. There are plenty of suspects and a few red herrings thrown in the mix and although it is very guessable what has happened it still kept my interest and I didn't quite get it exactly right.
It trots along at a decent pace and kept my interest. It didn't take more than a few hours to listen to (sped up to make it a more comfortable listen).
The main character is a very old fashioned and not quite believable chap with some slightly uncomfortable prejudices and assumptions. It is understandable given how unlikeable most of the characters involved are.
The narration is not the best and not the worse.

Great Story, shame about the narrator

Another great plot line from J R Ellis, who takes great care to describe the places. Sadly it’s a shame that the narrator mispronounces so many of the place names and his Yorkshire accent leaves a bit to be desired.

Poor narration

I got to the end of the book on the third attempt. Not a bad story line although quite a few of the characters were pretty stereotypical. I found the narrator quite irritating, all the women in particular sounded the same, and the accent was variable. I don’t think I would purchase another book read by the same narrator

Poor narration

The second book I have listened to with this narrator. Whilst the story is gripping and first rate I don't think I have ever heard such a poor Yorkshire accent. It makes all the characters sound as if they are old people and reflects nothing of the accents spoken by many Yorkshire friends.

A good read!

An enjoyable read. The pointless Poirot style ending spoiled it a bit for me as did mention of mathematical inprobability of their being Thunder outside at a crucial moment. But otherwise , I really enjoyed it.

Narration overdone

Good Story but narration is a little too detailed and accents are not good to listen to.

Excellent

Thoroughly Enjoyable. Listened as an audio book whilst sewing. Got the full effect of the Yorkshire dialect and countryside
