Summary

The luminous debut adult novel from the Waterstones Prize Winner, perfect for fans of The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock, The Essex Serpent and The Doll Factory

In an age defined by men, it will take something extraordinary to show four women who they truly are....

October 1840. A young woman staggers alone through a forest in Shropshire as a huge pair of impossible wings rip themselves from her shoulders.

Meanwhile, when rumours of a 'fallen angel' cause a frenzy across London, a surgeon desperate for fame and fortune finds himself in the grips of a dangerous obsession, one that will place the women he seeks in the most terrible danger....

The Gifts is the astonishing debut adult novel from the lauded author of Bearmouth. A gripping and ambitious book told through five different perspectives and set against the luminous backdrop of nineteenth century London, it explores science, nature and religion, enlightenment, the role of women in society and the dark danger of ambition.

A Beautiful and Evocative Story.

A wonderful story about the indomitable spirit and strength of women in a time in history where women were the still the property of their male relatives and society dictated that they were very much seen and not heard. A tale of miracles and magic, manipulation and greed and 4 women pushed to their limit who's resourcefulness and sisterhood ultimately saved them.

A fantastic page-turner

I absolutely loved this book, magical and compelling. The characters all playing important roles. Great example of strong, powerful, intelligent women. Beautifully woven in rich historical history. Bravo

It had moments of interest.

I’m seemingly out of sync with most people. I nearly gave up on it but continued and I can’t quite put my finger on what was missing for me. It just lacked ‘oomph’! The narration was run of the mill and as I’m from Shropshire, the accent didn’t ring true at all!

Did not disappoint

It is always difficult to find a new story, but this story was brilliant and very well written. I had not come across this author before and found the pace was perfect . The characters were introduced so that you got to like them more or even dislike some that you previously liked!! I will be looking for more by this author

Thoroughly enjoyed it

A really good all rounder!

Brilliantly narrated by Tuppance Middleton, the story gently unfolds to an exciting but satisfying conclusion. I especially liked the strong cast of women but also enjoyed parts of the story being told from the male points of view. The chapters being divided amongst the different characters was a great way of exploring various threads to an enjoyable story.
