Summary

Shortlisted for Audiobook of the Year - the British Book Awards 2020.

Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.

In the midst of war, he found love.

In the midst of darkness, he found courage.

In the midst of tragedy, he found hope.

Nuri is a beekeeper, his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo - until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. On the way, Nuri is sustained by the knowledge that waiting for them is Mustafa, his cousin and business partner, who has started an apiary and is teaching fellow refugees in Yorkshire to keep bees.

As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all - and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face - they must journey to find each other again.

"This is a novel of international significance. Courageous, provocative, haunting, it will open our eyes." (Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz)

Beautiful and moving

This book is wonderfully written. I felt genuine empathy for the characters by the end, and feel this has opened my eyes a little to the realities of the challenges of refugees. Art Maleks reading adds much.

Wow

It's the first time I've cried out loud while listening to an audio book. Actual sobs. I felt the grief, sadness and pain of the central characters their confusion and anxieties, their need to move forward but not being able to see which way this was.

It is very well written, the author is excellently descriptive and character building is exemplary. I have to mention the reader as well, he is fantastic. I have no idea how accurate his accents were but it was good enough for me and he didn't try and overly feminise the female characters which I find off putting in a lot of audio books. At the point I was crying I acknowledged how the readers voice had softened and slowed to allow the listener to take in the gravity of what was happening not allowed the emotion to build and I was able to lose myself in it. Brilliant stuff. I think this will stay with me for a long time. What an excellent book.

Heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal amounts

Everyone should read this book - we all need to understand that the world of a refugee is not the life they aspire to live - but if it is an improvement, then imagine what they must be running from!

Touching and heartbreaking

Really enjoyed this. Couldn’t stop listening as I wanted to know more about their life and journey. The characters felt real and so did their story. Despite it being a fictional tale much of it is based on real life accounts, the places, the events and the politics is real. There was so much meaning in the carefully thought out characters from Nuri being a beekeeper to Afra and her blindness and Angeliki and her talcum powder. Recommend to anyone who wants a personal insight into the atrocities of the Syrian civil war which is still happening.

Harrowing - must listen

Loved the writing style of this book. A harrowing subject but important to hear - teaching me about life far beyond my experience.

Good insight into the life of a refugee

I listened to this story over time, losing track of it . Sadly disorientating. Narrator, good.

Sad and thought provoking

This is a sad and beautiful story. Certainly have a insight into the plight of refugees. Made it personal...not just an image passing through on the news. :(

Different and moving

Beautifully read by Art Malik. Deeply sad story but written in such a matter of fact way to avoid it being sickly. Awful reality .
