Summary

THE NEW NOVEL FROM THE INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF FOSTER, ANTARCTICA AND WALK THE BLUE FIELDS

'This is a tale of courage and compassion, of good sons and vulnerable young mothers. Absolutely beautiful.' -Douglas Stuart (Winner of the Booker Prize 2020)

'Marvellous-exact and icy and loving all at once.' - Sarah Moss

'A haunting, hopeful masterpiece.' - Sinéad Gleeson

It is 1985, in an Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant, faces into his busiest season. As he does the rounds, he feels the past rising up to meet him - and encounters the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church.

The long-awaited new work from the author of Foster, Small Things Like These is an unforgettable story of hope, quiet heroism and tenderness.

'[Claire Keegan] creates luminous effects with spare material, so every line seems to be a lesson in the perfect deployment of both style and emotion.' Hilary Mantel

Short but profound

A well told and beautifully performed short work that centres around one man’s life and his reflection on his roots. References to the local Magdalene laundry are definite but nuanced.

A simple, thought provoking tale

A simple, thought provoking tale about Irelands dark past and treatment of those at the hands of society.

Short but dense

So much compressed into a short book. it centres round the treatment of unmarried mothers in Ireland and the infamous laundries. But it has a message of hope, as the central character is the son of an unmarried mother who was allowed to remain with her employer and bring up the boy to be a kind, loving, honest man. I will read this again.

So beautifully written.

I really loved the writing of this. It was so beautifully told, nothing overdone, nothing not quite enough. It was really well imagined and the descriptions and imagery were evocative without being overly artsy’. I really enjoyed the author’s voice, and listening to it on audible I thought the narrator really did it justice. I recognised things from my childhood in the writing, and things that I imagine from my parents’ childhoods too. I’ve never visited Ireland but that didn’t matter with this. I really enjoyed the writing. The story is so sad, but it’s one that needs to be told. I just wanted to know what happened next! I quite like that though, you know something is good when it leaves you wanting more. This was my book group’s book of the month and we shall be discussing it tonight. I can’t wait to hear other people’s opinions of it.

Stunning

This really is extraordinary. A novella of incredible penetration of a period in Ireland when we were lacking such a basic empathy towards some women and girls. She inhabits a small story within that lack of empathy and it is very stirring. Beautifully read too. Brilliant.
