Summary
Par un fébrile soir d'été, quatre anciens camarades de lycée désormais trentenaires se trouvent par hasard réunis à New Canaan, la petite ville de l'Ohio où ils ont grandi.
Bill Ashcraft, ancien activiste humanitaire devenu toxicomane, doit y livrer un mystérieux paquet. Stacey Moore a accepté de rencontrer la mère de son ex-petite amie disparue et veut en profiter pour régler ses comptes avec son frère, qui n'a jamais accepté son homosexualité. Dan Eaton s'apprête à retrouver son amour de jeunesse, mais le jeune vétéran, qui a perdu un œil en Irak, peine à se raccrocher à la vie. Tina Ross, elle, a décidé de se venger d'un garçon qui n'a jamais cessé de hanter son esprit.
Tous incarnent cette jeunesse meurtrie et désabusée qui, depuis le drame du 11-Septembre, n'a connu que la guerre, la récession, la montée du populisme et l'échec du rêve américain. Chacun d'entre eux est déterminé à atteindre le but qu'il s'est fixé.
À la manière d'un roman noir, cette fresque sociale et politique hyperréaliste s'impose comme le grand livre de l'Amérique déboussolée et marque l'entrée en littérature d'un jeune écrivain aussi talentueux qu'ambitieux.
