About this listen

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FEEL TRULY ALIVE?

Aged 24, Matt Haig's world caved in. He could see no way to go on living. This is the true story of how he came through crisis, triumphed over an illness that almost destroyed him and learned to live again.

A moving, funny and joyous exploration of how to live better, love better and feel more alive, Reasons to Stay Alive is more than a memoir. It is a book about making the most of your time on earth.

'I wrote this book because the oldest clichés remain the truest. Time heals. The bottom of the valley never provides the clearest view. The tunnel does have light at the end of it, even if we haven't been able to see it . . . Words, just sometimes, really can set you free.'

Not my type of book

Dear Matt Haig, just in case you also read Audible audiobook reviews (in addition to Amazon and Goodreads): I really enjoyed The Humans and Echo Boy but I'm afraid Reasons To Stay Alive was not my type of book. It's remarkable and admirable that you wrote, published and even narrated something so personal, something so honest but I'm afraid I didn't like it. I know I'm not supposed to enjoy a book like this but I just found it a tad too whiny.
I'm looking forward to more Fiction audiobooks of yours as I really like your style of crafting a fictional story.

the right book at the right time

I've lived with depression and anxiety for most of my 27 years and I've watched and read a lot on the topic. something about Matt's account places it above the rest. Im not sure if its his openess and frankness, or the passion and empathy you feel from his reading of it, or the mix of memoir, advice, tips etc, or just a case of good timing for me, but I recommend this for anyone who has either suffered from mental illness, or knows someone who has. which is everyone, whether you realise it or not. everyone should read this

Wow What a book!!

I loved this book the rawness of Matt’s story, How open he has been about his life and his struggles and the strength he has show to over come it.
Finished this book really fast as I just wanted to hear more and more.
Also I’ve recommended it to a friend who struggles with depression as I feel it will really help her, knowing she not alone with this disease she has.

Deep and meaningful

An interesting look at someone’s experience of depression. Insightful and useful commentary, especially as I find myself the parent of an anxious child.

I hope this book manages to do what it aims, by giving people hope and showing that there is a way forward.

Brilliant

An absolutely brilliant book, i suffer with anxiety and depression and he describes the feelings spot on, i relate to everything he says. This would also be a great read to help those who have someone close to them struggling with mental health have a better understanding.
