Summary
Exclusively from Audible:
In the year 1805, the young and enthusiastic Horatio Hornblower is given his first command as Captain of HMS Atropos. A 22-gun sloop, it is hardly the biggest ship in the navy, but undeterred, Hornblower boards the Atropos in eager anticipation of the voyages to come.
Acting as flagship during the funeral procession for Lord Nelson, Horatio's first endeavour is to pay tribute to the country's fallen hero. However, his peaceful ventures are at an end when he is confronted with the alarming news that a large Spanish frigate is quickly descending upon his considerably smaller ship.
Determined to return to land unscathed and triumphant, Hornblower fights valiantly in this next instalment of C.S. Forester's naval series.
Hailed by the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Sir Winston Churchill for being 'admirable and vastly entertaining,' C.S. Forester became a hugely influential 20th Century author.
Born in Cairo, raised in London and buried in California, the metropolitan writer experienced huge success with his Horatio Hornblower series as well as with his later works, The African Queen and The Good Shepherd.
His literary genius is perfectly encapsulated within this endlessly entertaining narrative, and his heroic protagonist draws us in to another titillating journey through the Napoleonic wars.

Great listen as always
Clearly a filler written afterward - but I just love this series. Good historical note at the end too.

Shiva me Timbers.....
Been looking F'ard to the series as I have amassed this treasure trove, with the movie popping it's head above the poopdeck every leeward. I have to say that I am more surprised than I thought I was going to be. I assumed it was going to be good, and I am very glad to be proved wrong Sir.
It is very GOOD Indeed Sir.

Hugely entertaining.
Two short and one long story brilliantly knitted together. Fairly light in the tone. No heavy drama, just very entertaining.
Christian Rodska - spectacular as usual.
And the ending. Yikes!

Great performance.
I really enjoyed this book and completed it within days.
The narration is excellent and flowing, and it is just a pity that the stories are so short.

Hornblower at his best
This has to be my favourite of this brilliant series. It’s engaging from the first page on his journey to take up his new commission, through a surprisingly entertaining funeral and onto his journey to recover sunken treasure. A really entertaining read, beautifully read, as always, by Christian Rodska with brief insights into the history of the period into which this novel was set and why CS Forester kept his character outside the main battles of the period. Excellent read. Thoroughly enjoyable. Would highly recommend.

Brilliant writer.
The characterisation is great - deep and complex. The plots are a series of mini-stories but held together by longer threads. The action is well-described and there are many elements of background descriptions too. Forester is a great writer and the narrator, Christian Rodska brings out all the nuances of the story.

great story, superbly read
another great instalment in the Hornblower saga, brilliantly performed. some of the episodes in what is in fact a succession of linked short stories are classic and vastly entertaining. Forester, like O'Brien later, never lets you down!
