Summary

From the author of the “Magic 2.0” series comes an outer space caper where it’s the thief who’s having something stolen from her - her life.

It is the distant future, and Baird is a loner, a part time spy, and a notorious alleged thief. “Notorious” for the audacity of her crimes; “alleged” because nobody has ever been able to legally prove she committed any of them.

When the hush-hush agency known as the Toolbox recruits Baird, being a clandestine operative seems like a great way to get paid to do what she already does anyway. That is, until a mission goes wrong, and Baird is infected with a deadly virus. With only seven days to live, Baird has to complete a series of daring missions, each one designed to bring her closer to a cure.

Allegedly.

Baird suspects the Toolbox might not be telling her the whole truth. She's not sure what to believe or who to trust.

And the clock is ticking.

It's not dreadful

It isn't great either. You don't have to look to hard to see the gags coming a mile off. The twists and turns mildly meander through the plot to a predictable outcome.
Overall, the storyline had more potential than it achieved. The narration was flat and I really don't know if that was due to the material or the performer. So, my Performance and Story scores could be flipped. It is a bit of an oversell to call this a romp, but it is fair to say it doesn't lose it's pace and it keeps you hooked to its inevitable end.

Strange and surprising

I can’t even put this into a genre! It’s definitely science-fiction (and as an avid Star Trek geek I can relate), but it’s not quite... It’s almost in the vein of Groundhog Day but not as humorous.
However, it is entertaining, it is enjoyable, and it is innovative.

So if you don’t enjoy it it is because it’s in a league of its own. The narration is perfectly suited to the story (listen to the sample and judge for yourself). The dialogue is very smart/clever, the play with semantics is enjoyable. The premise of the story, whilst circular, resolves itself in a surprising way!

I’m guessing that this book is Marmite, you’ll either like it or loathe it. I thought that I was going to loathe it, but curiosity kept me listening. I’m glad that I did. A gentle (beach worthy) tale.

It’s not J. D. Robb’s ‘In Death’, but it’s a step up from the old ‘Lost In Space’. Definitely worth investigating.

preferred Magic 2.0

the story was okay. I found it hard to keep my attention in some places. Magic 2.0 was my benchmark though. if you haven't read that then you should!

I really liked this it is a great book. Sci Fi that’s not too serious and funny at times. Well worth the credit

Enjoyable read

I really enjoyed this book. It seem like it was going in one way and then went in a different direction which ended up being very satisfying.

A entertaining listen throughout

I was really immersed in the world Meyer created. The story haf just started to get repetitive, but it takes another direction. Really enjoyed it

Good fun

Not up to his 2.0 series but good fun to listen to nevertheless. Would be good to see more witty books from Meyer.

Bubble-gum, for the ears

Lightweight and frothy. Far-fetched fun. It may have following storylines, since the universe and characters are now all set.

Boring and unlikeable characters

The first scene started off intrestingly, but the rest of the book was pretty boring.

The main character excells in everything, acts like a spoiled teenage girl and everyone admires her.
She completes all her missions without failure and all people are either on her side licking her boots or if they don't they are made fun of in a miniute.

The voice actress did a good job, given the material she had to work from.

Like the story but not the narrator

This is a fun space crime adventure story with many laughs but the narrator is far too dry to really convey their authors work in my opinion
