Summary
Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Male, 2013
Audie Award Finalist, Classic, 2013
Narrator Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

A good performance of a great story.
An unaltered version of Shelley's fantastic and unsettling narrative. The narration is accurate throughout; the only thing stopping me from giving 5*s is that the reselling lacks a little emotion in places. One could argue that this is reflective of the characters themselves, but I felt a little more vitality could have been given to the retell ing.
Otherwise, a very good performance and well worth acquiring.

Would have preferred a different narrator
Stevens was fine, but his reading lacked variety and became repetitive after a while. Toward the end, I was listening at 150% speed as a matter of course. He also has a tendency to pronounce 'mountain' and 'countenance' in the American way, which was rather irritating.

First Class Narration.
Haven’t read this for many years - forgot what a sad tale it is. First class narration by Dan Stevens giving Shelley’s story-telling new life and raw emotion. Highly recommend. Away to check out other books narrated by Dan Stevens now!

Brilliantly tragic and desperate.
I just didn't quiet realise the effect the book was having on me whilst listening to the absolute despair of the monster that Frankenstein had created. Compelling. I could not stop listening. I did question why I was listening to such a sad tale but was totally effected at the end and I cried for about 15 mins and I am in awe at the way the writing and literature stirred such emotion in me. Mary Shelley was a marvel.. Brilliant. Only a slight negative if I have to be pressed to make one, I just felt that the narrator was a little over the top with the despair in the voice and could have varied the feeling between despair and normality more when talking as the monster.

Just brilliant!
Mary Shelley is such a talented and incredible writer! So clever, holding a mirror up to the world the way she does and opening the mind up to so many discussions regarding science, responsibility (especially parental responsibility!), accountability, the human psyche and our capability for committing great acts of love and compassion as much as the awful deeds triggered by fear, hate and violence.
Still stands up strong today... and a great performance.

Fantastic, nuanced reading.
Excellent from beginning to end. Dan Stevens handles the narrative beautifully and brings Shelley's often tricky narrative alive with great deftness and skill. Highly recommended.

such an eloquently written classic story of tragedy, murder and woe. Not what I expected when listening to the story of Frankenstein's monster! I could not decide who I had more empathy for! fantastically narrated with great passion and performance.

Most eloquent prose ever written
Beautiful words, Shelley’s breathtaking and poignant command of language transcends time. It is as poetically perfect as always and so eloquently performed by Dan Stevens that I shall forever hear his narration when I read Frankenstein. Utter perfection and a joy to read or listen to the quotable combinations of artistically presented phrases…and it is offered free of charge, such a gift!

Pleasantly Surprised
I understand, finally and wholeheartedly, why this story is considered a classic. It was absolutely an amazing ride from start to finish. I'm sad I've never consumed this story before, delighted for having finally experienced it for the first time, yet devastated it is now over... I might have to come back to this story, re-listen to it as well, as the narrator did a phenomenal job capturing all the characters and the deeply disturbing emotions and events.
Absolutely amazing!
