About this listen

Perfect for fans of Pride and Prejudice, Perception continues the adventures of the Bennet sisters in the Regency world we all know. For lovers of Austen and sequels Longbourn and Thornfield Hall to reimaginings like Eligible and Death Comes to Pemberley, this is a sweeping historical epic to savour.

Mary Bennet does not dream of marriage. Much to her mother's horror, Mary is determined not to follow in the footsteps of her elder sisters, Jane (now Mrs Bingley) and Lizzy (now Mrs Darcy). Living at home with her remaining sister, Kitty, and her parents, Mary does not care for fashions or flattery. Her hopes are simple - a roof over her head, music at the piano, a book in her hand and the freedom not to marry the first bachelor her mother can snare for her.

But Mrs Bennet is not accustomed to listening to her daughters. When one of Meryton's wealthiest residents reveals her son is returning home, Mrs Bennett is determined to hear wedding bells ring for one of her girls. Thrown into society, Mary discovers that promises can be broken, money can conquer love, and duty is not always a path to happiness. But by the time she realises her perceptions might be false, might she have missed her chance at a future she'd never imagined?

Critic reviews

A charmingly written evocation of what might have happened to the remaining Bennet sisters. Very enjoyable (Katie Fforde, Sunday Times Number One bestseller)

Unexpectedly good!

Excellent sequel to Pride and Prejudice, I think Jane Austen herself would be seriously impressed.

Enjoyable Listen❣️

It’s not very often I come across a book about Kitty and Mary after Jane, Lizzy and Lydia leave home. In fact I think this the first. Both Kitty and Mary were likeable and I was very much invested in them finding love. The new characters were interesting and the author treated us to a little insight into the lives of E&D and J&B. Overall nice listen and the narration was quite good.

I love this book. It's well written and brilliantly performed. A great extension to the Austen set of books.

Charming

Restraint of emotion. desire and behaviour is the impression left by this truly delightful audiobook. The narrator's performance is pitch perfect.

Absolutely brilliant and pitch perfect

Outstanding writer!!! Wonderful detail. Paced sensitively with excellent rendition of the poise to be found in the Austen originals. Totally believable follow up. Read expertly by Lucy Scott( once again- what a narrator she is).
No negatives whatsoever- I wish there were further continuation.

I highly recommend this. ( needs to be filmed- we all need cheering up in these difficult times). 10 out of 10

Lovely sequel featuring the Bennets after P & P

I was recommended to read this and I'm glad I did. This is a lovely story featuring Mary and Kitty Bennet. Nearly everyone is perfectly in character (especially Mrs Bennet) and Lucy Scott is a perfect narrator (apart from pronouncing "modish" wrongly!)

enjoyable story focusing of the least 2 loved Bennett daughters Mary and kitty.

I have listened to this multiple times, on repeated listening this wish the early part with Mary the library etc was longer however I love the fact it shows both Mary and kitty off and develops both of their characters and improving their relationships with their sisters after they have left longhorn with their husbands. Good narration.
