About this listen

What are you thinking, Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions storm cloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do? Just how well can you ever know the person you love?

These are the questions that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.

So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war.

A First Rate Thriller And A Great Deal More

This is the story of a young woman who goes missing in Missouri. It's told in two contrasting and utterly believable voices: the woman's and her husband's and the truth about their relationship is gradually revealed as layer after layer of lies is peeled away.

It's hard to say much about the story without giving away the plot. What I can say is that the premise is wonderfully audacious and the structure is a labyrinth of twists and turns. Watch out for the really dramatic twist half way through the book that projects the novel into a whole new narrative dimension.

The result is a first-rate thriller but what makes it stand out from other first-rate thrillers, is the quality of the writing: the keen observation of human behaviour; the cinematic use of visual detail; the attention to even the most minor characters, the rigid control of narrative technique, and, above all the forensic examination of contemporary relationships. It's an acute commentary on love and infatuation, marriage and parenting, gender stereotypes and social class and it's perfectly read by the two narrators.

Insight into female mind, even if not typical

I was fascinated by insight into the female mind even though the female is hardly what you would call typical. Clever plot with its twists and turns

Best thriller of the year

I've had a bad run on novels recently so it was a relief to listen to this which was gripping.  It's not too bloody, which many thrillers have become.  The writing is of a high standard and makes some acute observations about relationships.  But more importantly it's a great plot which makes you want to keep listening.

Keeps you wondering

Very good back story about Amy and Nick’s history in getting together. Very clever the
way that it is all put together with inter-linked stories. Enjoyed most of it although a little drawn out here and there. A very good listen that could be picked up after a break.

Enjoyable but a bit disappointed

Would you consider the audio edition of Gone Girl to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gone Girl?

The twist in the story although I had predicted some of it.

Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't.

Any additional comments?

The beginning of the book was really hard to get into but once I got passed a few chapters it was good. I wished the ending was different though!

What a Marathon

I think if I had not been visiting my husband in hospital with a 3 hour round trip for 5 days, I would have given up on this book. However, I am glad I did not. It made my journey's in the car just fly by and I even got back into the car dying to carry on with the book. A well read tale of phscological torture. Both readers were good and believable. Good twist at the end too.

New to Audible and this was my first listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm new to audiobook and I have found it an absolute joy. I can listen to it whilst at work and on the train. Which has allowed me to consume a book in a week or so.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is definitely Amy she twist and turn so much the psychology of her character is utterly engaging.

Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

At first I was a little unsure of the performance as I had other voice's in mind but these soon developed into the characters and was very pleased by the end of the book.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just couldn't wait to listen to more and was excited to hear what happened next.

Excellent performance, beautifully executed story

What did you like most about Gone Girl?

Two things I really loved about Gone Girl were the tight plot twists and the believable turning of the characters. Listen to this, and you are in for a ride.

What does Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The voice acting take this book to an entirely new level. I will never be able to read the book without hearing the horribly chippery voice of Amy, or the self-righteous voice of Nick.
