Overall very enjoyable
Very educating, sometimes funny, sometimes sad. Well written characters. Very well performed. If you like historical books you will definitely enjoy.

Just wonderful, you’re gonna love this, it’s such a treat.
The language is beautiful, the drama and pace never quit. You are really immersed in the 17th century. Written in about 1850, perhaps, it has a convincing connection to an period within only a couple of generations of the authors own..

Goodish book
Well read, entertaining book, but not as good as I had hoped for. The plot is quite linear and the Three Musketeers are all two-dimensional fops who instantly bow to the newcomer D'Artagnan superior intellect and swordplay. I always thought this story would be about their tutoring him to becoming their equal, Fourth Musketeer, but alas he immediately outshines them in everything! They border on idiots who have been waiting for a teenage leader.
The most interesting and clever character is 'Her Ladyship' whose scheming and political machinations, as a woman, make her especially reviled for the time. This results in her particularly unpleasant downfall. Whenever two men fell out, it inevitably led to them prancing around each other, swords drawn, until one of them manages to flesh-wound the other, then the victor hugs the defeated man and they become best friends. But if a woman crosses you... I'll let you read the book! I should not judge an old story by todays standards.

You only know the half of it
the popular story is only the half of it. enthralling is the complete story which was excellently narrated and characterised. highly recommended.

Pretty good reading by Simon Vance
Despite anglicising some proper names Simon Vance gives a clear consistent reading of a huge range of voiced characters. His reading of this and other novels by Dumas in English translation are unsurpassed in the Audible cataligue: in my view no other versions need be considered; I've tried several.

this is one of the greatest books ever written. i would recommended it for late teens wanting to start the classics.

Patchy
I hugely enjoyed The Count of Monte Cristo so was looking forward to finding out why The Three Musketeers is so famous. Unfortunately I found this story a huge let-down: full of shallow, callous, stupid, largely one-dimensional characters, this was a "Boy's Own" story by an author I suspect hates women (or perhaps hated one woman in particular, who became the basis for My Lady). I didn't want to give up, on account of it being a supposed classic, but I was counting down the hours to the Gothic ending. Simon Vance was superb as always, hence the 5 stars for the performance.
