Summary

‘Wonderful on characterisation and family dynamics, and done very deftly, with that wry humour of hers. I was very entertained by her clever, tongue-in-cheek plotting.’ Marian Keyes

The uplifting new story of fresh starts and second chances from the Sunday Times bestselling author Erica James....

After a long and seemingly happy marriage, and a wonderful family Christmas, Louisa is stunned when husband Kip asks for a divorce on Boxing Day. He’d never seemed unhappy – and they’ve raised three children together.

For months, Kip has been secretly seeing a younger woman – and if that wasn’t bad enough – it’s the woman who broke their youngest son’s heart.

Now Kip is moving out and embarking on a new life with Zoe, and Louisa is left to pick up the pieces. Their beloved family home, Charity Cottage, is up for sale, and tensions are running high.

Yet, despite the betrayal and anger, when Louisa lays eyes on what might be a unique and welcoming new home, she feels a first glimmer of hope that life might be taking a turn for the better.

And while Louisa is making exciting plans, Kip finds himself facing challenges of his own and begins to learn that living the dream may not be as simple as he thought…

Brilliant

Loved the family ups and downs and how they dealt with such turmoil. A lovely read, as with all her books.

This book made me feel 'normal'!

Wow, I just closed the final page of this gripping book, and it's left me needing a moment to collect my thoughts. If you've ever found yourself pondering over your own family dynamics, this is a must-read that will hit close to home.
Louisa is a saint in my eyes, and if only we could all be as magnanimous.

Making sure her children still show their father respect, even if he has walked out on their 40-year marriage, this matriarch proves that reaching out and being kind is the only way to bring peace to one's own life, let alone anyone else's.
I loved this snapshot of a family in tragic times. Seeing how they first pull one another apart and slowly rebuild relationships is a heartwarming experience. Exquisitely written by James, each character is not only believable but brought to life with clear descriptions that help your imagination place them carefully within this tale.

It's a great read that I would definitely recommend.

Great story

I really enjoyed this book, the story had just the right amount of drama and moved quickly. The kind of characters I thought about between the times I listened! Narrator was good and I found it easy to tell characters apart. You hear from a few different characters point of view which I always find great for a story.

It was ok

Not my most favourite Erica James' book? Started well and I was hooked in, but then it changed a bit, everyone started playing happy families and it all got a bit ridiculous. Well narrated throughout, but it went on a bit with unnecessary detail and could have ended sooner. Overall, it was a bit too twee for me. I don't think I'd have been so forgiving.

Family life explored

As always, Erica James explores relationships and there are lots of them in this large family! You are hooked at the outset, but the conclusion is a little contrived. Sadly the narrator spoils the flow with the attempted accents.
