About this listen

Cormac McCarthy, best-selling author of National Book Award winner All the Pretty Horses, delivers his first new novel in seven years. Written in muscular prose, No Country for Old Men is a powerful tale of the West that moves at a blistering pace.

Llewelyn Moss is hunting antelope near the Texas-Mexico border when he stumbles upon several dead men, a big stash of heroin, and more than two million dollars in cash. He takes off with the money, and the hunter becomes the haunted. A drug cartel hires a former Special Forces agent to track down the loot, and a ruthless killer joins the chase as well. Also looking for Moss is the aging Sheriff Bell, a World War II veteran who may be Moss' only hope for survival.

Raw and lean, No Country for Old Men is another masterpiece from one of America's acclaimed novelists.

Critic reviews

" No Country for Old Men gets off to a riveting start as a sort of new wave, hard-boiled Western....Harrowing, propulsive drama." ( The New York Times)
"A mesmerizing modern-day western....While the action of the novel thrills, it's the sensitivity and wisdom of Sheriff Bell that makes the book a profound meditation on the battle between good and evil and the roles choice and chance play in the shaping of a life." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Shades of Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, and Faulkner resonate in McCarthy's blend of lyrical narrative, staccato dialogue, and action-packed scenes splattered with bullets and blood. McCarthy fans will revel in the author's renderings of the raw landscapes of Mexico and the Southwest and the precarious souls scattered along the border that separates the two." ( Booklist)

Strange tale

I think I saw the film years ago and although it grabbed my attention the end left me underwhelmed
The book has done the same
Fascinating g characters and the old sheriff was wonderful but the ending still didn't sit right with me
I probably wanted happy endings and in real life they don't often happen
Anyway it won't stop me listening to more by this author and the narrator was excellent

As harsh as the land it is set in.

Long, brutal story of unsophisticated yet deep thinking people who live in the deserts of the American South West, and how their lives ere profoundly changed by a battle between drug peddlers, the law and their sense of right and wrong. The highly skilled narrator brings the story brilliantly to life with an excellent grasp of the region's dialogue and accents, and their taciturn reluctance for long, detailed explanations.

I was not aware that Cognac McCarthy was such a prolific writer, as the only other work of his I have read is his "All the Pretty Horses" a tale of boyish rebellion, which takes the reader from the bleak farmlands of Texas to the equally bleak and cruel towns and villages of Mexican border country. This story was filmed, as was "No Country for Old Men", but the first story was a disappointing approximation of the excellent book which fortunately cannot be said of "No Country" the casting of which was excellent and the acting first class, especially that of Billy Bob Thornton as the ageing sheriff and Joaquin Bardim, as Seguerro the man with no scruples.

Highly recommended, as is the film of the book.

Nihilistic

Beautiful thought provoking writing, poetic almost. Bit too nihilistic a view of the world for my taste

Philosophising

It's seems to be more philosophising on the effects of the drug trade rather than telling a story. The action story peaters out with the psychopath winning, which left me disappointed but I guess it's more about the journey than the outcome. It's good but different.

First time author for me

I have become addicted to audiobooks over the years. Most have been good, others adequate, but few like this book excellent. The story has a brilliant plot with twists and turns, the characters are believable and the narration is second to none.

Highly recommended, so much so that will I have to watch the film now and have downloaded another book written by Cormac McCarthy.

A cracking listen - great voices, well paced

A great version, and my first ever audio book! Voices were superb - never over done or corny, with a menacing Shigure.

Throughly enjoyed the recording - made a drive from Aberdeen to London fly by! Can't wait to see the film now (and my next audiobook too!)

p.s., I've also read The Road by McCarthy - also magnificent and would recommend in an instant if you like No Country

You’ve seen the film...

Well to start with I thought the narration was cliched but it didn’t take very long at all to grow on me, it really suited the book and its modern day western theme.

I won’t ruin the story suffice to say it’s different enough from the movie to be worth a listen and it’s also a lot better than the movie in my opinion, though it’s hard not to visualise the actors in the character’s roles.

Definitely recommended, if you’re a lover of the film, the genre, westerns and anything in between. Think you’ll find it hard to be disappointed.
