Summary

'John Connolly is the creator of a unique blend of thriller and horror who receives rave reviews every time' Sunday Telegraph
'A moving entry in a remarkable series' Irish Times

A Child Missing. A Mother Accused. Charlie Parker Is Their Only Hope.

In Maine, Colleen Clark stands accused of the worst crime a mother can commit: the abduction and possible murder of her child. Everyone - ambitious politicians in an election season, hardened police, ordinary folk - has an opinion on the case, and most believe she is guilty.

But most is not all. Defending Colleen is the lawyer Moxie Castin, and working alongside him is the private investigator Charlie Parker, who senses the tale has another twist, one involving a husband too eager to accept his wife's guilt, a disgraced psychic seeking redemption, and an old crooked house deep in the Maine woods, a house that should never have been built.

A house, and what dwells beneath.

'Dark and dangerous ... but where there is also kindness, loyalty, love. Ultimately, it's a story of hope' IRISH EXAMINER

Great novel

Great story, beautifully written, most compelling. Will purchase more John Connolly Charlie Parker audiobooks, even ones I’ve previously read in paperback.

I cant wait for the next instalment.

Another brilliant story in the series. I love many of the characters, but Angel and Louis are my favourite and I was glad they were back. I highly recommend!

Parker-Ok not great by Connolly standards

Humour was there, laughed out loud sometimes, people thought I was nuts! The storyline was there but not as developed as previous books (and I have all the Parker books). It just felt ‘less’ than I had anticipated 😕.

Another great story from one of the world's greatest crime writers.

Even after 25 years, John continues to surprise, amuse and entertain at the highest level. Those laugh-out-loud similies sit juxtaposed perfectly with the grimmer elements of the story. This title would also be a great introduction to Charlie, Louis and Angel for any newcomers, despite being so far down the line. Jeff Harding is an easy listen too; great at bringing characters to.life without often overstepping the mark.

A refreshing listen

Jeff Harding's narration makes the welcome return of Charlie Parker even more special.
Great to read/hear all the characters back in their recognisable character voices. Moxley, Louis and Angel.
Can't wait for the next one.

Back to his best.

John Connolly, doing what he does best. A great listen, smart, witty, darkish…
Loved it. Didn’t want it to end so soon.

The Instruments of Darkness

As always John Connolly never disappoints, long may Charlie Parker and his companions play on.

Back to Great Form

I felt over the last few years that too much of the supernatural was going into the Charlie Parker series. But this one is excellent and has some supernatural elements but also a great plot and strong characters. The audio book is enhanced bt Jeff Harding as narrator - he does so many voices, male and female really well
