Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Every family has a secret.
The mega-rich Pallanders are used to luxury – a castle in the Scottish Highlands, a villa in Tuscany, a billion-dollar fortune and an island in the Caribbean – but their perfect life is about to be shattered.
Every father has a favourite.
Sebastian Pallander dies, leaving a pitiful amount of money to his wife and children. His family fight over the scraps as old rivalries and bitter jealousies come to the surface. And when Pallander’s son is killed in mysterious circumstances, everyone suspects foul play.
Every killer has a motive.
After a desperate race for survival, the relatives gather at their estate to weather the storm. They all begin to wonder: who will be next? Where has all their money gone? And will any of them get what they truly deserve?

The story as a whole
I really enjoy listening to David Monteath, as well as stories by Denzil Meyrick. The book had a good review in the Sunday Times, and it didn’t disappoint. The plot did get a bit silly towards the end but I really liked the main character and the ending was a bit of a surprise. I can recommend this if you like a slow burning, complicated, story combined with excellent narration.

everything you want in book
Finished in a day and a half, (very quick for me). Absolutely loved it, suspected every character at one time or another throughout the book. Plenty of suspense, enough laughs to lighten the mood , and top notch story line. Hope we will hear more of Cara Salt on the future. The new DI on the Tartan Noir block. Love her. She's sassy, fallible and above all likeable. More please Mr Meyrick .I hate the cliche unputdownable, but , well, in this case, it most certainly was.

Great storytelling
Really enjoyed this latest offering from Denzil Meyrick. It does lack the humorous banter of the DCI Daley series, but still a very enjoyable listen. Great writing, and brilliant narration, as always, by David Monteath.

High speed thriller
Denzil Meyrick is a tremendous author. He writes rounded, genuine characters and can embed you in the location. For this novel I had guessed the end fairly early but the narrative keeps you engaged. Slightly less of the broad humour that cuts into his other work but thoroughly enjoyable all the same

Very cliched, no surprise as to the culprit. Disappointed as The author is better than this……..

Disappointing
A rather disappointing standalone (so far) from Denzil Meyrick that’s saved in by the ever-brilliant and highly listenable David Monteath. This is an attempt at a modern-day country house mystery, populated by faded Scottish aristocrats and new-money moguls. Unfortunately, none of them is in the least sympathetic or even interesting. The lead detective is little more than a rough sketch of a person who ultimately added little to the plot. There are a series of twists towards the end, none of which is in the least bit surprising. This is the second dud in a row from the previously reliable Meyrick. Hoping for a return to form soon.
