Summary

Former Prime Minister Theresa May exposes the abuse of power by public institutions and politicians in a series of riveting first-hand accounts from her time in office.

As Prime Minister for three years and Home Secretary for six years, Theresa May confronted a series of issues in which the abuse of power led to devastating results for individuals and significantly damaged the reputation of, and trust in, public institutions and politicians. From the Hillsborough and Grenfell tragedies, to the Daniel Morgan case and parliamentary scandals, the powerful repeatedly chose to use their power not in the interests of the powerless but to serve themselves or to protect the organisation to which they belonged.

The Abuse of Power is a searing exposé of injustice and an impassioned call to exercise power for the greater good. Drawing on examples from domestic and international affairs she was personally involved in at the highest level, including Stop and Search and the Salisbury Poisonings, the former prime minister argues for a radical rethink in how we approach our politics and public life.

awesome book

A book that really makes you think about how we should all conduct ourselves throughout our lives and how we conduct ourselves can have unintended consequences

Well worth purchasing.

Very enlightening, Westminster over the last decade has lost credibility, can it be saved ?

What stood out most?

Apparently, I have to write a review. Leaving stars is not enough, apparently. It’s a 15 word minimum review.

Amazing

What an amazing woman. Many other people in her position would have written a self-justifying memoir, but she’s chosen instead to focus on examples of abuses of power in society, mostly in the UK public sector. Great read and says a lot about her integrity

I was initially hesitant about this book but was pleasantly surprised. It's very well written & recorded. A thoroughly good listen.

Hmm

Did I miss mention of the Tory abuse of power around covid payments!?
Perhaps one of the better politicians out there, with a degree of moral fibre, but the bar is super-low.

very interesting

Having also listened to the Nadine Dorries book a lot makes sense and I agree wholeheartedly with what is being said. I wish more people in the know or in "the blob" would listen or read these books, maybe then the country would be run for the people who elect them and not by the elected people wanting to push there own agenda. They may not agree with what the public ask of them, but the publics views should also not be dismissed. This country has a democracy not a dictatorship so these former MPs are "old school" and know what they are talking about so new MPs should listen to them and their constituents.

A fascinating insight

This is not your typical politician justifying their decisions or claiming to have been presented unfairly by the media. This is an honest, balanced and truly insightful exploration into some of the biggest political issues in recent history. If only more of our leaders had this sense of moral duty and service. Moreover, such an openness to acknowledge their own blindspots.

From LBC interview to my Audible library

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Theresa May and have a new found enjoyment of books about politics- I have already quoted her a few times, especially when talking about the challenging and contentious I have had in the past.

It is so interesting to hear from Mrs May on so many subjects and she was so humble to point out the traits that she recognises formed an invisible barrier between herself and the wider world.

I was blessed to know James Brokenshire & had a little tear in my eye as his passing was far too soon & he truly loved to hear what was happening, rather than what people thought he wanted to hear.

I highly recommend this book as an understanding of Mrs May and her approach to serving - which can be backed up by many people who worked with her or around her in the Home Office.

Thank you for such an honest and reflective review of your experience in the public eye as MP, Minister with or without a cabinet role & of course as Prime Minister. It is lovely to know more about you and about the workings of Government.
