Summary

One hundred and ten centuries from now, humanity has spread across space. And all-powerful machines rule the humans who were once their masters.

It began in the Time of Tyrants, when ambitious men and women used high-powered computers to seize control of the heart of the Old Empire including Earth itself. The tyrants translated their brains into mobile mechanical bodies and created a new race, the immortal man-machine hybrids called cymeks. Then the cymeks' world-controlling planetary computers - each known as Omnius - seized control from their overlords and 1,000 years of brutal rule by the thinking machines began. But their world faces disaster. Impatient with human beings' endless disobedience and the cymeks' continual plotting to regain their power, Omnius has decided that it no longer needs them. Only victory can save the human race from extermination.

"Frank Herbert would surely be delighted and proud of the continuation of his vision." (Dean Koontz)

Brilliant story

Absolutely brilliant, found it hard to stop listening as it was so gripping. I hope they both never stop writing the Dune story

Loved this book.

As with all the Dune books it’s such a great read. I’m so envious of the talents portrayed .

Entertaining

It’s worth a listen.
It’s not high art but it’s fun.

There are some weird musical interludes but they don’t detract from the story.

Fun Sci-Fi

The Dune prequels can be divisive among fans but I find, taken as their own thing, they are very enjoyable. Great setting, characters, plot development.
I would recommend it.

Decent backstory to the events of Dune.

Having read this book when it was first published I was looking forward to listening to it as the narrator had done a good job with House Atreides etc. Here again the performance is good, let down only by his attempt at a Scottish or Irish accent for Iblis Ginjo, he really should have quit after his awful attempt with Gurney Halleck previously. One personal gripe is that the background "mood" sounds between chapters should be removed.

Pleasantly surprised

I loved Dune but found the sequels a little hit and miss. The stories for me became a little thin and didn’t have the substance I wanted. I thought I’d give this a go as has to spend credits before suspending my subscription. I have to say I found it a refreshing piece of work. I was drawn back in bay all the seeds planted for much of the World in Dune and I thought they were built and expanded very well, even if compacted in a narrow historical time frame. Am now going to have to listen to book two, I’m interested in the characters, Universe and Dune again.

Great story, annoying background music!

Loved the story, (read the paperbacks) but audio ruined by constant intrusion of loud music.

Much better than I expected

I really enjoyed this and although I'd recommend reading the original Dune novel first I actually think it stands up well in its own right or if you wanted to read the books chronologically. left me excited to read the next one.
